I just finished Ikari novel. Not the whole novel, though. I read only Yuma and Naoto part. Honestly, that was the only reason why I bought the books.
So, here’s the story.
It was summer; Yuma was enjoying gay beach party with his gay friends. After that, he visited his mother at hospital, and then went to gay sauna. That was the place where he met Naoto for the first time.
They did sex in the sauna, and out for dinner after. Yuma invited him to his home because Naoto just came to Tokyo and haven’t decided yet which relative’s home he should stay at that night. Yuma asked for his name on the next day, after they did lots of things together.
[Note: I believe the ramen-eating scene from the trailer is when they were having dinner together after sauna]
Either Yuma or Naoto said a thing about leaving, so it became natural about having Naoto staying at Yuma’s place. Yuma casually said he’s going back at what hour every time he went for work, and Naoto went to supermarket or pachinko while waiting before going back to Yuma’s at night.
One day, Naoto said he might caught a flu and Yuma replied, “If you’re not feeling well, you can stay at home tomorrow when I’m off to work, but if you dare to steal something, I don’t mind if I got caught being a gay; I’ll report you to the police!” Naoto just laugh and said, “Thank you for trusting me.”
Since then, they did “ittekimasu” - “itterasshai” and “tadaima” - “okaeri” like a married couple.
Naoto also get close with Yuma’s family; visiting Yuma’s mom in routine, spending New Year with Yuma and his brother and brother’s family; even his brother’s wife supporting Yuma’s relationship with Naoto.
After knowing Naoto, Yuma barely hanging out with his gay friends and go out to enjoy gay night life. He dashed back home because there’s Naoto waiting for him. When he went out to meet his best friend one day, he accidently saw Naoto with a girl in a café. He started to have all the questions about her inside his head; like: is Naoto bi and she’s his another lover? Or is she a homeless too, like him? When Yuma asked him, at first Naoto said he doesn’t want to talk about it. Then, Yuma went, “is it okay for me to believe you?” and Naoto finally said, “She’s my sister. It’s been a while since the last time I met her.”
When Yuma’s mom died, his family was tried to finding a grave for her. Then, Yuma asked him, jokingly, “Since it seems like your family doesn’t close to each other, will you share the grave with us?*” Naoto replied with, “Okay.”
(*In Japan, one family share one grave)
Yuma’s family and Naoto went to Mt. Fuji for seeing a cemetery near there. When they were back at home and Naoto was off to buy some snack, Yuma watched the news about the killer, having three moles on his right cheek. Naoto has three moles on his right cheek. Yuma asked him about that, “Are you the killer?” But Naoto changed the topic and confess seriously, “Mt. Fuji was so beautiful. If I died and stay at there forever, I guess die is not that bad. You asked me to share the grave with your family, right? If sharing one grave is impossible, next to yours is okay, too.”
[Note: they had sex that night; which I believe is the one in the trailer, the kissing and bed scene on rainy night]
The next day, Naoto gone and never came back. Yuma was going crazy because thinking the reason that causing Naoto’s left; new guy? When he discussed it with his brother’s wife, she suggests maybe Naoto got an accident somewhere and hospital is trying to contact him, and Yuma went, “How can they contact me? We’re not family so how can they know we’re living together and they can contact me?!” Or, maybe he went somewhere and Yuma just should wait for him, and again, Yuma went, “But since he moved here, he never spent a night outside before!” by mouth and “But he looked so happy here spending time with me.” by heart.
Yuma also went crazy because he started suspect Naoto as the killer, not just because the moles, but two of his friends’ houses are robed, and his brother’s wife told him at her workplace before, there were cases same like those, A and B getting robbed, and the culprit is C’s boyfriend; and Yuma started to hallucinated, having Naoto’s voice inside his head, calling him stupid because he let him stay at his place, made him know his friends address so he can rob them when he run out of money, because he thinks that he love him.
And right after that, Yuma got a call from police, asking if he knows a guy named Onishi Naoto. Yuma started to panic and answer he doesn’t know, because he didn’t want to get involved with criminals Naoto did.
Until one day, his panic and craziness all gone because police caught the culprit who robbed his friends’ houses. Not Naoto. The killer is not Naoto, too. So, he started to find Naoto, because for the first time, he realized, when you got someone you treasure the most, all important things no longer matter.
He called the police couple times, asking for Naoto if he got some accident or stuffs. No clue. Then, he went to the café he once saw Naoto with a girl. Luckily, the girl was there. Yuma asked her, if she was the girl who talked to Naoto before, and how Naoto is, where he could find him. After she told him all about it, Yuma out from the café with his face full of tears.
The truth is, Naoto was born in Chiba, the only son from a lovely couple. When he was 4, his parents die in accident. Then, he stayed with a relative, and in that time, he met her. They were so close, like sibling. That’s why Naoto called her his sister before. Naoto work on his own, but only to find out he had a heart disease, and can’t live without taking drugs. Because of it, he barely go to work, and decided to quit instead, that was when he met Yuma.
When they were talked in the café before, that was the first time she heard about Yuma. Naoto said, Yuma is different with other guys (back then at school) who only used him when they find out he was a gay. Yuma made him feel stronger. When he got a heart attack that day at a park, police found a paper in his pocket, with Yuma’s and her numbers written on it. But Yuma said he didn’t know him. At first, she wanted to call Yuma by herself, but she didn’t do that because maybe Yuma didn’t want others find out his relationship with Naoto.
Yuma went to the mentioned park, standing on the last time Naoto visited there. Then, he broke down. With tears, he keep saying, “I’m sorry.”
But Yuma can grant Naoto’s last wish, to stay forever near Mt. Fuji, in the same grave with his mom. At first, his brother opposed because he only lived together with Naoto for 6 months, but Yuma asked him, “What if your wife died only 6 months after you got married? What will you do? Naoto for me is like that.”
What I regret (and broke my heart) the most is, until the end, they didn’t say they love each other.
I cried when I read it, but it made me want to watch the movie much more. I seriously cannot wait to see Go and Bukki portray Naoto and Yuma :(
