Q: What kind of music do you like?
Kami-chan: I like dance musics. Before I enter Jimusho, I don’t know music in detail. I know more music little by little from music show that senpai attended. I feel a sensation that my life change after I know songs from artists that I thought, “Isn’t this good!” I thought that music have that kind of power too. That’s why, I’ll be very happy if there’re more people like music and have their life change because of Johnny’s WEST.
Shige: Lately I always watch ‘We are the World’ PV. Just because there are so many famous artists in that MV like Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, Kenny Loggins, and Billy Joel, I always feel my heart beats so fast no matter how many times I’ve heard the song. The strength of their thoughts moved me. My mother is a fan of western songs, like Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi. If they have a live performance, my mother will dress-up very rocker-like to go there (laughs). Maybe because of that influence, since very little, I always listened to western songs.
Ryusei: Black Eyed Peas. The albums that I’ve bought aren’t completed yet, but these days, if I listen (to the songs) directly, I like them again. I like songs that easy to listen to; like ‘Shake it up’, Kis-My-Ft2’s song. I think it’s good because it sounds like a musical club.
Junta: Musics that I usually listen to are the ones that come from dance performance. I like when I could enjoyed while watching it. I also often to watch concert from foreigner artists, but if from Japan itself, the artists that’s interesting is Amuro Namie-san. I become so enamoured by the production power of a world’s show that consistent from the beginning to the end. Because I have interest to produce a show, everytime I listen to a song, I broaden my image with my own way. If there’s a song that I produce by myself, I want to make it with a little bit darker atmosphere. I think that way, I could show different face expression because Johhny’s WEST is a cheerful group.
Non-chan: The one that I like these days is ‘Baby I’ by Ariana Grande. I know that song because it was recommended to me by a stylist whom I often bother. Her transparent voice is sexy, I always hear it. The song ‘Last Christmas’ that she covered is good too. Even though it’s not the season (Christmas), that song is still good to listen to (laughs). Like when I move out or back to hotel after work in Tokyo, when I take a little break, I often times hear that song. It also good to listen to in the morning. I’ll become very fresh if the song plays while I brush my teeth in the morning.
Hama-chan: Because I love rock, I often listen to rock musics. I also often come to rock concerts. I thought, “So, there’s this way to be raptured like this,” because I was fascinated by the high level of the performance power, or the ‘talk’ that pull the audience, and there are so many other reasons (to be fascinated). When I go to karaoke, the song that I often sing are KinKi Kids’ ballad songs. The key from songs like ‘Anniversary’ or ‘Love is… ~itsumo soko ni kimi ga ita kara~’ are so easy to sing by myself. But I think, not just me, the other men, even women could sing these songs easily too. I kind of think that, “isn’t that kind of thing (easy to sing songs) is already being calculated?”
Akito: Shounan no Kaze-san. The lyrics are straight, I also like the feeling atmosphere from ‘THE Otoko’. After that, unexpectedly, the ones that I like are covers from hit songs that played in stores and cafes which being sung by women. Isn’t it arranged to be much more stylish? If you know the original song, will think “changed like this, hm?”, so it’s become interesting and I like to listen to those a lot. Anyway, I want Johnny’s WEST’s song to be covered by someone. Revised the lyrics, the main point that we want to deliver can’t be changed, but if the original song want to be rearranged, very welcome! If I challenge myself to cover a song, I’ll sing ‘Propose’ by TUBE.
Q: First CD that you bought?
Kami-chan: Because I dance, I bought a compilation album with total 30 dance number songs. (Dance number: songs to dance with).
Shige: I think around elementary school until high school, compilation of soundtracks from songs that accompanied attraction in Universal Studio Japan. I also have decided what CD that I want to buy next. Eejanaika! Of course I already ordered it. For my families and relatives, total 6 pieces.
Ryusei: ‘Hana’ by Orange Range. When in Junior high school, my senpai who is two years above me walks while carrying portable CD case. When I see how many CDs lined up in that case, I thought “Oh, it’s so cool!” Because I want to copy that senpai, I went and bought CD ‘Hana’ right away.
Junta: First time I being bought a CD is ‘Garagarahebi ga yattekuru’ by The Tunnels. But instead of liking the songs, I like the anime character in the jacket cover more. But the first CD that I bought by my own money is ‘C Album’ by KinKi Kids.
Non-chan: Tamaki Hiroshi-san’s CD. When I was in 4th grade, in my hometown, there was the album release event. If you bought the CD, you could get a special treatment and you could get a hand shake. Tamaki-san that I saw in front of my eyes is so handsome! Because he is so so handsome, it became a memory that makes me shiver.
Hama-chan: ‘WHITE BREATH’ by T.M. Revolution. Even though at that time I was still in elementary school, because that song is so ‘booming’, I always sung it. Even more, the first time I said to my mother, “I want to sing this song!” and my mother immediately bought the CD for me. When I went to the CD store by car is also still clear in my memory.
Akito: The one that I bought with my own money is Kanjani8’s single debut, ‘Naniwa Iroha Bushi’. Because at that time I already join the Jimusho, I could get signature from all of the members!
Q: Musical instrument that you like?
Kami-chan: I could play guitar since 3rd grade in junior high school. All of that because the acoustic guitar that my teacher in dance school I used to attend gave me. By the way, the first musical instrument that I touch is drum set, and I play it since 5th grade in elementary school. After I play guitar, I don’t want to play drum anymore, but lately, because it’s a long time since the last time I played, if I play drum set again I always said, “I can still do it!” (laughs). I also learn to play piano and bass. I want to try to play trumpet. If I remember many musical instruments, I want to maximize it with creating a song. Even though these days you could create music with computer program, still the sounds from real musical instrument are better.
Shige: Until now, I couldn’t play any musical instrument at all. But now, from all the member, ah no, from all the people, I’m the one that have the biggest will to play musical instrument! Because of the drama SHARK 2nd Season, I started to play bass, but when I touch (play) the musical instrument, slowly I feel a bond (with that musical instrument). Now, I already feel that musical instrument is a ‘partner’.
Ryusei: Tambourine and castanets, when in was in kindergarten I played harmonica keyboard a little. Furthermore, in playing maracas, I think I mastered it if I was told to do so in Johnny’s. In butai ‘Naniwa Zamurai’, I was allowed to use all of my ability to play triangle. I learnt the danger of missing standard rhyme. Because I heard that musician that active these days, they all start from training, me too as a musician, already passed the ‘gate towards success’ right…? I could countinue with my stupidity, because the members could remain tolerate this kind of me (laughs).
Junta: I was kind of get caught by Taiko that I played for concert practices. Taiko is so manly and cool! I have strong opportunity to play keyboard at concert, but I just trained a little. Actually, there’s another challenging musical instrument that I want to try, which is Harps! I think in Johnny’s, there are no one else who could play harps (laughs).
Non-chan: Is recorder included (laughs)? In elementary school music show, I once played drums. I also once buy an acoustic guitar, but I don’t know why but the timing with that guitar feels not right, so I give that guitar to a senpai. If there’s any chance, I want to try to play drums once more. Because I think it for accomplishment of “I’m not a newbie (of playing drums)” (laughs).
Hama-chan: Guitar (quick reply)! Electric guitar and acoustic that fit with me, I have 5 pieces, and the ones that I use lovingly are two of them. When I play multiple songs, I thought, “Technology from this kind of genre mixed with that genre could be like this, huh?” (laughs). I couldn’t even fall asleep if I didn’t touch guitar once a day. Except guitar, musical instrument that I really want to play is drum. In 2nd grade of middle school, first time I touch a drum was when I play drums in my friend’s house with copying it from listening (could know the note from only listen to it). Because I have good ear, I could instantly remember the rhymes and play the drum.
Akito: Guitar or Bass, drums or piano. Eventhough there are so many challenging musical instrument, everything is played depend on the song right (laughs)? But, because I think that piano is important to learn music, in the near future, I plan to buy a keyboard. Musical instrument that I want to play… maybe this musical instrument… lately, when I went with Hama-chan to electronic store, there are turntables that being displayed. Then, we both play copying a DJ, but because we don’t know how to use and how to enjoy, in just two minutes, we gave up (laughs). If there’s an opportunity, I want to learn how to use a turntable.
Q: Singing voice that you like?
Kami-chan: Tegoshi-kun from NEWS. I saw in a music show, he said that he train to enlarge his lung capacity to increase his vocal ability. When I heard that story, I ordered a device to train cardio-pulmonary function like what Tegoshi introduce in that show from internet (laughs). This small device gives burden to our breath, if I do it seriously, it makes me exhausted. But after I continue, not only in singing, but I also gain result from dancing. Eventhough I move a lot already, I didn’t feel exhausted. I want to be able to sing higher note in louder voice. But I forget all of that and try to polish it technically.
Shige: Because of ‘We are the World’, I come to like Kenny Lodgins. His voice that soaring high is so cool! If the Japanese one, of course it’s Sakamoto-kun. Eventhough I’ve come to V6 concert already, I want to see his musical. I also like Ohno-kun’s (Arashi) singing voice. When combine the voices (Ohno’s voice with other members), instantly his voice could be distinguished. I used to hate my voice. Before, my voice is higher, and I’ve been wondering, “Why is my voice different from that person (Ohno)?” I really didn’t want to sing in front of public. When I live as a Junior, I slowly realize that voices are innate from birth for each person. It also mentioned that voices are part of musical instrument, that if used properly, will beautiful sound come from it? I want to accomplish that thing (good voices).
Ryusei: I like sweet singing voice. Beside that, I like people who can express many things through their voice. Like when people singing acapella, deliver it with pure tender feeling; when dance, becoming cool and powerful. From Jimusho senpai, I respect KinKi Kids as artists. I like (Domoto) Tsuyoshi-kun’s voice which no one can’t be imitated, then when (Domoto) Koichi-kun’s voice mixed (with Tsuyoshi’s voice), borns a harmony, it was a great thing. It was a singing voice that like a miracle. I don’t like my singing voice. I want sweeter voice and want to sing ballad, and powerful voice too so it would match great powerfull rock song. If I didn’t practice more, I couldn’t do it, right?
Junta: When filming ‘Gokusen’ drama, I’ve been called as a guest in music festival in Taiwan. I couldn’t forget the singing voice of Daniel Powter that I heard there. He didn’t use vibrato, and his voice is so clear. Because I’m weak in vibrato, I think if I could produce calming voice like that, it would be good. Beside that, the singing voice of Sakamoto-kun V6. His voice is so deep and very good. When chatting with the recording staffs, topic about Sakamoto-kun’s songs often times comes out. For example, about him who only need 1 take when recording, and immediately finish perfectly. I resent my own voice. I don’t know why like whining right (laughs)? My voice sounds sentimental and childlike, I want my voice to be sexier.
Non-chan: Sakamoto Masayuki-kun. I was mesmerized with his voice that so dandy and grown-up-like. In V6’s song GUILTY for example, the way he sing in “itami ni naru” part, it’s so cool! Besides, in last year musical, eventhough it was the first time I heard Nakagawa Akinori-san’s singing voice, but isn’t his voice heart throbing? Even if it was fake, but it still make goose bumps. And for my own voice, I don’t like it, but I’m not hate it too (laughs). But, I’m grateful that so many praise me because of my voice. Because of that I’m very happy. So, I want to sing more beautifully. Not just want to be better, but I also want to make people’s hearts who listen to my feeling through that songs throb.
Hama-chan: Maybe band vocalist’s voice, singer that fit with the songs, and voice color that didn’t change. Voices that becomes transparent when singing ballad, and voices that ‘hit’ in hard songs. More over, screams which sounds like squeezing voice when telling mysterious messages from a song. I thought could I sing like that too? If from senpai in Johnny’s, I like the voices of Nagase (Tomoya)-kun from TOKIO and (Shibutani) Subaru-kun from Kanjani8. Especially when Subaru-kun sings “MIsetekure”, his face is full of craziness. Subaru-kun that always jokes around, when he was in the song’s world, I think it’s like he said “Ah, come and see♥” (laughs). In this song, before intro, eventhough it was set that Subaru-kun would scream the song’s title, but from that line, it was a song already, and I feel “This is Rock!”
Akito: I want singing voice that comes out straight and high like Sakamoto (Masayuki)-kun from V6, Ohno (Satoshi)-kun from Arashi, Tegoshi (Yuya)-kun from NEWS. Of course I like each of their voice. Lately, I saw that Kuwata Keisuke-san sung “Kawa no Nagareno Youni” dressed up like a women, I thought I want to sing like that too. I don’t like with my own singing voice. I want to be able to produce masculine low note sounds. Ten years from now, could I produce that kind of sounds naturally?
Q: Sounds that you like?
Kami-chan: I really like the sound of car engine. It feels so good when speed-up. The sound of engine when it turns on is also good. The sound of Lamborghini’s engine is so damn (very) good. Please imagine the sound of “Wiiing” that you could hear in F1 races. If I actually in the road, I do thought that the sound is so noisy (laughs), but if I heard that sound, without realizing it, my body will heat up (enthusiastic).
Shige: Sound of school bel. In the dusk, if I heard sound “kin kon kan koooon”, I could cry because I remember my younger time. Times like that, when I was younger (than now) already passed without realizing… times when I run chasing the sunset (heartily).
Ryusei: Sound of the waves. Few days ago I went to Hawaii, and of course the ocean is nice. With only seeing it, my heart feels calmer. While listening to the sound of waves that crashing the tetrapod, I saw the star in the night sky. Ocean in the night time is good. If I saw it, I feel like inhale it, I come to feel free. Isn’t feeling free in regular days is so rare? In Hawaii I thought that see have magical effects, right… the sounds and the views really could heal me!
Junta: I like the sound of the rain that coud be heard from the outside of my house when I’m in a day off in the morning and in the night before I go to bed. I could relax. But I hate to hear the sound of the rain when I was outside (laughs). Because I like to relax at home, no matter how busy I am, I’ll always provide time as much as I could to relax in my own room.
Non-chan: The sound of the ocean is good, right? (Shige: “I like your answer a lot!”) Lately, because of the jobs, I was invited to go to Hawaii, when I saw the ocean beneath the blue sky, just like that, it could relieve my heart. Ideally, I want to take a nap while swinging in a hammock while listening to waves sounds. Waa, eventhough it’s just an imagination, but it make me want to go to southern islands (laughs).
Hama-chan: “Poko poko poko poko”, the sound of the water boiling. When I was little, when I was sick, my mother put the kettle on the stove, warm me up. When I was alone at home and there’s that scene, I thought, “What a good sound, right”, and it heals me.
Akito: The sound of the shoes soles. Beside that, the sound of meat when it was grilled. I want to make it a ringtone (laughs). Lately, I was invited by Yokoyama (You)-kun (Kanjani8) to yakiniku store, it tastes so delicious! Sound of cooking is good right? I give up on diet already (bitter laughs).
