I see a lot of people planning to move to Dreamwidth, but I still can't figure out what it is.

It's a Livejournal variation, except it has a unique "Watch, Trust, Friend" (they don't call it that anymore, I think, but that was its original term) for "people you read, but who you don't allow to look at anything but your public entries," "people you allow to look at your generically protected entries," and "people you read and allow to read your generically protected entries."

Generically protected being what LJ calls friends-locked, as opposed to filtered or totally private. Dreamwidth also has filters, far as I know. (I need to set some up...)

DW also allows creating an OpenID account to comment with -- something like archangelbeth.livejournal.com, for instance. You get an icon or three (six?), sign in with OpenID, and can be put on filters or "WTF" lists.

I'm rather enthusiastic about it for those reasons, because it means I can have fic-reading filters that include... just about anyone I've put anywhere in my "circle" (watched, trusted, both), as they call it. But if my reading-list is overwhelmed, I don't have to add to that to let someone read one of my filtered posts.

It also allows one to post to both LJ and DW at the same time! They don't want to force people to leave the prior community. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if they found a way to aggregate LJ friends-list reading with their DW reading, someday. (Heck, they may be working on it now!)

From what I can tell, it IS one of their goals. Getting actual protected entries from LJ will probably require LJ cooperation and collaboration, though, so that may or may not happen.

On the other hand, if it does, it's a great change for LJdescendent systems everywhere.
