V-Day scene

Feb 14, 2008 15:42

I had this idea the other day for a scene in a romantic comedy where the couple talks about how life isn't like a romantic comedy. It probably needs some context to make it really funny, but I haven't written that part yet. So, I hope it's somewhat amusing nonetheless, even lacking such things like plot, characterization, etc. Oh, and I can't really do the proper screenplay formatting on here, so deal with it. I don't want any format nazis leaving me nasty comments.

FADE IN
INT. LIVING ROOM-NIGHT

A couple sits on a couch drinking bottled beer and watching a movie. The couple on the TV screen kisses, and the credits roll. CLAIRE wipes a tear from her cheek and regards TREVOR with a mixture of love and frustration. He is oblivious.

CLAIRE

You’re lucky this isn’t a romantic comedy.

TREVOR

What?

CLAIRE

Our life. You’re lucky it isn’t a romantic comedy.

TREVOR

Why?

CLAIRE

You wouldn’t get the girl.

Trevor looks surprised, clearly thinking he already has gotten the girl.

CLAIRE (CON’T)

You’re that guy at the beginning of the movie who’s totally wrong for her, and everyone knows it, but she’s hopelessly in love with him anyway. But then she meets a guy who’s really perfect for her, only they hate each other at first. It’s a convention of the genre. Eventually, however, they realize they’re madly in love with each other, and she leaves you. I leave you.

TREVOR

But you said I was lucky this wasn’t a romantic comedy…?

CLAIRE

Yeah. You are.

TREVOR

So you’re not leaving me?

CLAIRE

No. The guy I’m really supposed to be with hasn’t shown up yet.

She grabs the remote, turns off the TV, and gets up, walking out of the room. Trevor continues to sit on the couch staring at the blank TV screen, shocked. He takes a deep swig of beer.
