I posted this on the MeFi memorial thread but I figured it gives me an excuse to update my under-used LJ.
I got into D&D sometime in 4th or 5th grade, and played all the way through college. I sucked as a DM, but I loved playing.
When my uncle found out I was playing, he gave me
all the manuals that he had (2nd cover...dragon vs. pegasi ftw!),

My dad gave it to me when I was in middle school, I think in an effort to get me interested in something besides sitting in my room reading. I dont know why he had it though, since he never played himself. He probably wanted to though. I was too dense to see it at the time. In retrospect I probably would have enjoyed it.
When I was in high school (and had friends that did roleplaying) they were normally playing various vampire games. I just couldn't seem to get into those... plus by then I was working half the time they were playing, which wouldn't have been accepted. Being told "Shut up" every time I asked a question about the gameplay or the plot got kind of annoying too. Made me think I was only invited along for my car. Oh wait... I already knew that. Yeah. I was such a loser that the gamers looked down on me. :-)
So being invited along was about as rewarding as playing one of those Magic-style card games with someone elses 'crap deck'... which I also did out of boredom a few times per summer. Gee, they already know what I have and have stacked against it. Great.
I forget where I was going with this.
RIP Gary.
