I guess it's a sad indicator of the status of my life lately when I'm wanting to start a post with, "Wow, I actually did stuff this weekend!"
Seriously.
No but I did. And it was nice! Saturday morn, I headed on over to the mall to hunt those most elusive of quarries: shoes. Once I finally found a parking space (which was a chore...I'm not sure that I'd been to a mall with a parking garage before), I made my way into Dillard's in search of some
shoes by Mephisto, mostly because they're fucking hot. Also I read about them online, so of course that makes them uber-cool. Alas, they ran anywhere from $110 to $160 per pair, and though I'm sure they're worth it, I just couldn't spare that much bling, know what I'm saying? So I wandered around the mall a bit and finally found Rack Room Shoes. After much deliberation, I settled on two pair of Skechers:
Alley Cats and
Energy (although I could have sworn those had a different name in the store...). They were having a "Buy One Pair, Get A Second Pair Half-Off" sale, so like a good male, I took advantage of the situation.
Then I went home, strapped on my Alley Cats, and headed down to San Marco to meet up with
greenguru. She's a cool chica and we (or at least I) had a lot of fun. She didn't run away screaming at any time during the day, so I'm assuming she had fun too. We had lunch at this cozy little Italian place (mmmmm calzone, mmmmm pizza) and then mosied on down to San Marco square. Wow. What a cool little area that is; for one of the few times since I've been here, it actually felt like I was in another city (instead of just feeling like I'm in some generic city that's not home). All sorts of neat little shops and cafes and working and non-working fountains (the non-working fountains normally have water in them, I learned) and statues of lions and fiberglass manatees galore! We spent a good chunk of time in this bookstore run by a woman from Portland, and I was dragged into a few clothing stores (I tried to keep the snide remarks to a minimum), and we had dessert at this expensive restaurant across the way. I mean come on, $7 tiramisu? It was good, but still...I also played the narcissistic camera-whore card and got her to take pictures of me with a manatee (dressed as a doctor named Dr. C. Cow and carrying a smaller manatee-patient named M. Anatee!) and with the lions at the fountain in the center of the square. She used black-and-white film, so mere mortals may gaze upon my countenance and not be blinded by my otherworldly beauty.
I do feel kinda bad about the whole taking-pictures-of-me thing...but she took pictures of things that were not me, so maybe it evens out?
We also walked through some surrounding neighborhoods and on down to the river, where we chatted as we sat on the cement ledge with our feet dangling over. God what a gorgeous view that was, with the city over to our right and mostly-undeveloped land directly across the river from us. The skies were wide open and the river made a pleasant lapping sound ten feet below us and we talked until the sunset and we watched the clouds form like brushstrokes. Then we headed back.
On the way home I picked up some steaks and potatoes, because
theonyx and I were gonna grill. And grill we did, and it was good. We also watched
Sneakers! Then at about 11 we (Dana included!) headed back down to San Marco because the theatre there was showing Fight Club at midnight. Red met up with us there and we all managed to stay awake the whole time. Neat little theatre, too...every two seats have a small table between them, and they have beer on tap, as well as Haagen-Dazs ice cream! It was definitely cool and I would like to thank Red for suggesting it!
Yesterday, Onyx and I met up with his friend Niel for lunch at this awesome greasy-spoon burger joint run by an insult-hurling ex-Yankee (or was he a Met?). That place is great and the food is plentiful. I also had a fun time staring at this drop-dead gorgeous blonde named Janet (Janice?) who was there with a new puppy and some boyfriend-type person. Mmmmmmmmm.
After that we headed down to CompUSA, where we spent entirely too much time there waiting on salespeople to help. Finally we got out of there and we headed out to this awesome park to play disc golf. Wow. That park is nice: a full 18 holes of disc golf, four or five soccer fields, at least two baseball fields, a running track, a lake, a playground...Unfortunately we were only there for a little under two hours --- only got to play through 10 holes --- but we had a good time. I definitely want to go back, and soon.
Then I cooked tamale pie last night, and enjoyed it, and talked to
monkey_cat on the phone for a bit. And then I went to bed. All in all, a most excellent weekend. Then I had a dream last night where I was being chased by
John Wayne Gacy, which was not excellent.
