I love vacation

I spent the morning chatting it up with the mom-in-law. I've decided that there is a method to her madness. She's like a mad scientist who speaks about atoms and other invisibles. I know there's truth to what she says, but its beyond my realm of logic and creativity.

11:30am went to eye doc. The medical assistant who did some of the pre-tests was clearly not in a chipper mood. Normally, I can't be bothered by others testiness, but I was feeling mellow, and said to him, "You're grumpy today." He was surprised, then started laughing and gave me his "I didn't eat breakfast, and now it's lunch, and the computer's slow today" story. Then it was time to see the doc. He did an eyelid test on me - this is the first time in my 22 years of bad vision that a doc has done that. It's weird, like someone checking your elbow or your ear lobe. I couldn't help but ask why he took up opthamology. "I knew I wanted to be in healthcare, but didn't like the blood and guts, so being an eye doctor was a process of elimination." Can't knock down an honest answer.

After the doc, I started driving thinking that I wanted to go to this pottery studio in North Hollywood, but ended up at the Laemlle theather. I didn't know anything about the movies showing so I took a guess and bought tickets to to 1pm showing of Modigliani. I gave the movie boy my ticket and asked 'how are you?' He said, 'I'm great, thanks for asking, noone ever asks.' I guess being on vacation is making me nicer than normal (hmmm..). Andy Garcia plays artist Amadeo Modigliani and the setting is Paris. Italian born painter Modigliani and Jeanne Hébuterne fall in love. They have 1 daughter and she is pregnant with another child. Modi runs in the circle of artists Soutine, Picasso, Diego Rivera, et al. He dies from his excessive drinking and tuberculosis. Jeanne then throws herself and her unborn child out the window of her 5th floor apartment. The movie was dedicated to their first daughter. The cinematography is so beautiful, a bit long, but overall, worth the money. Kingdom of Heaven w/ Orlando Bloom on the otherhand, is not even worth renting.

As I walked towards my car after the movie I noticed my toes needed new paint and I had a 50% off foot massage coupon at Nail Elegance. It's always nice when you become a regular somewhere and they know your face. The woman giving me a foot massage was 5 months pregnant. Talk about guilt! I should've been giving her a massage!!

I met Vin back at the house and decided that I wanted to see the sunset, so we bought some cookies, candy and a 6-pack and headed towards free Zuma to park and chill, then I saw a sign that said "Jazz Tonight" at Paradise Cove so we pulled in. We ordered the clam chowder, appetizer platter, a beer for Vin and mojito for me. The jazz-blues band was to my left, and the view of the water to my right. The appetizer platter was huge with ribs, grilled prawns, calamari, coconut shrimp, chicken tenders, and chips for $15; the mojito had just the right amount of ingredients (useless knowledge: mojiots were born in Cuba over 100 yrs ago and are as well documented as the Cuba libre). Too bad it was overcast and no sunset, but nonetheless, the whole day was a sweet surprise!!
