Two more classes down. With each lecture, it seems I'm getting into my stride more. Thursday's class focused on Confucianism and Legalism, and I had someone come up to me at the end of the class and tell me they enjoyed the lecture. That's partially what it's about, getting the students to actually enjoy what they're learning. I consider it a victory.
Of course, the class did start with me on a slightly annoyed kick. When I arrived at the classroom, as I usually do around 8:30 if I don't have to make copies, and occasionally earlier, the door, which is normally open because there are no classes in that room prior to mine, was locked. There was no one in the building's security office, and I could only wait until someone showed up, at which point I made it very clear that I wasn't happy. Here's a close approximation of the conversation between myself and Lowly Security Guy.
Me: We need this classroom unlocked.
LSG: Do you have a class in here?
O_O
Me: Yes. At 9:00.
LSG whips out his keys and unlocks the door.
Me: If you set a precedent with this door being unlocked before this class, it's proper to continue with the precedent of unlocking it the same time in the morning.
LSG: There is AV equipment in the room.
Me: There has been AV equipment here on other days. The door was still unlocked. So again, if you set a precedent with this door being unlocked...
LSG Whips through the clipboard.
LSG: The room isn't on the list.
Me: Excuse me?
LSG: You have to call security to make sure that the room is on a list of rooms to be unlocked in the morning.
Me: Despite the fact that I have a class on the schedule that meets at nine?
LSG: Well...
Me: Don't worry, I'm not mad at you. You're just the messenger. I'll just make sure my room is on the list, so Security isn't on my list.
Two students where there from the moment I discovered the classroom to be locked. I'll I heard was "oooo" at the end of the conversation with Lowly Security Guy. I happened to mention it to my department chair, who immediately wrote down a note to talk to the Dean's secretary.
Wow. Problem solved.
Thursday's class was in every way, a confidence booster.
In SQUEE! news, I managed to find an e-book of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, using the
pinyin romanization instead of
Wade-Giles or the
Yale version.
And it's free!
I don't have time to write any more. I'm needed downstairs for the game. I'll post non-class stuff a little later.
