Taking it upon himself, despite objections from his teammates in the New Avengers, Wolverine decided to track down the explosive freak and get some blood vengeance on the guy. Reluctantly teaming with a SHIELD unit at the behest of Iron Man, Wolvie cornered Nitro and got blown up along with the soldiers he was with.
Now, we're not talking a little blown up. This was a full on firestorm and you can plainly see Nitro standing above Wolverine's remains: adamantium skeleton without a stitch of flesh on it and nothing so much as even in the eysockets.
Nitro wanders away, makes a phone call...which doesn't go so well, and as soon as he hangs up Wolverine knocks him down with a sucker punch; mostly healed excepting for his shoulder which is still smoldering. This is in no way a spoiler as this all happened about a month ago and the issue that comes after this one, I just discussed, is due out this week I believe.
Something wonky this way comes...
When we were first introduced to the character of Wolverine we're given only sketchy details on his healing factor. All we basically know is that he recovers really quick from wounds that would be damned near fatal to anyone else. There's also the little detail that his healing factor would be stronger were it not constantly trying to force the adamantium out of his body. Over time we see this pressed to all sorts of extremes, even in an X·Men annual where it's revleaed that his healing factor can restore him from a single cell of his blood if exposed to a sufficient energy source to boost it. Later still we learn that his mutation hadn't fully completed its cycle when the adamantium was introduced and that with its removal his mutation progressed still further, which brings up something that's also been bugging me for another time, and that now wounds that would take him hours to recover from he can heal in practically the blink of an eye. Even with the adamantium back now...his healing factor is still more amped up than it was previously...
...but Wolverine shouldn't be able to heal himself if there's nothing left for him to heal from. Nitro's blast was very thorough, bombarding him in a wash of flame damned near as hot as the sun. There was quite literally nothing left of him excepting the adamantium skeleton. Even if you goto an extreme and say that there was still his natural bones under the metal or some bits of marrow...there's no way his healing factor could've gotten him up in so little time.
We're talking not even a complete phone call...just shy of 5 minutes at best.
