Summary: He'd do anything for her including testify againist her ... to help her and her father and because she was his partner.
Spoilers: "The Verdict in the Story."
He sat on the stand trying to tell himself to do exactly what he had told her. He swallowed hard trying to figure out if he was able to this to her… but then it occurred to him; it wouldn't be done to her but for her. And that was all it took. With a look in her direction and a softly mumbled, "That's a lotta heart Bones." He looked at Caroline and answered her question that yes she did have time to commit the crime.
She looked at him and waited for the words to come. She hoped he'd be able to do it, but she could tell by the jump in his throat, and the tears in his eyes that he didn't know if he could do it. When he did finally open his mouth the words that were mumbled to her and the almost nonexsistent crack of his voice brought a tear to her eye.
Both had the tears but neither let them fall; that is until he found her outside the courthouse. One tear fell as he grabbed her and pulled her into his arms. He pulled back and looked hard at her; with his forefinger under her chin he wiped a tear from her cheek with his thumb. She closed her eyes at the touch and leaned into it slightly. His head tilted to the side, she wasn't sure if he was about to say something or…Angela's hand on her shoulder broke her thoughts. Then her fathers figure walking freely toward her broke her embrace with both Angela and Booth, and broke the barrier that held the rest of her tears. Her father came to her and hugged her tightly, she back, and as they stood embraced in the center of her friends and what she had begun to call her family, she looked at Booth as he leaned againist a column. The look in his eyes made her heart flutter with excitement.
She was happy, truly happy for the first time in a long time. She had a friend who would risk everything to keep her friendship, even incarceration. She had other friends who knew her well enough to know that she wanted them to do the right thing, the objective thing, no matter what her heart wanted them to do. She had her brother… and more importantly she had her father. The first man she ever loved, the first man to ever walk out on her was here in her arms, never to let go again.
As they walked away from the courthouse she thought about her life and the people who had been there for her. Her father-no matter if she didn't realize it or approved of the method. Her brother. Her best friend-who could sometimes be a friend to extremes. Her team. And last but not least, her partner and friend-who'd testify againist her, say she had time to kill a man all to help her and her father. She smiled as she realized with the touch of his hand and the wink of her fathers eye in her partners direction that they may not be just partners and just friends much longer.
He smiled at her as she hugged her father and realized that she had more friends than she thought. While he watched her with her father he reflected over the past years with her. He smiled thinking about how he had just testified againist her, said she had time to kill a man all to help her and her father……all because he loved her. And with the wink her father just gave him, he knew it wouldn't be too long before they were more than just partners and just friends.
He was perfectly happy that his daughter was going to be in good hands if anything were to happen to him and even more happy that he was free to watch over her without running from the law.
