A skein of thoughts. (Introspective)

A skein of thoughts.

Today is the day Martin Luther King was assassinated.

Growing up he was one of the few historical figures I first began to admire. Not just because of the level of political involvement that sort of runs through my family. But because he has a strange magical aura around him. He changed the world with dreams and words. He didn't have advisers, he didn't have demographics, he had words, and belief and hope.

At that age he epitomized for me, how someone could be both loving and strong. How activism does not need to have to do with righteous anger, or indignation, or outrage - but could be about doing the right thing because you wanted to, because all that was stopping you was changing your mind and the willingness to roll up your sleeves and do it.

Today I have a more informed view of Dr. King's role in the Civil Rights movement - it wasn't as magical as I first thought. But the fact that I chose to study American politics, I believe was profoundly affected about the stories told about him and this time period. How people with good ideas planted the seeds of change in our culture.

I believe in the magic of people, in their ability to find the best parts of themselves and do the most amazing things. I believe its okay to make mistakes, as long as you pick yourself up and keep trying. And, by trying I only mean finding the best parts of yourself and letting it come through. I do not hate cynicism and the process of becoming and evidencing jadedness, but I don't choose it for myself I want something better than settling for sophistication.

I hope to make my world better by words and ideas -- they way I've seen done by better men.

Edit: Closely followed by copious amounts of elbow grease, of course. (sigh)

introspect, hope
