I thought I posted this here but evidently I did not! I wrote this back in January after reading Helen Zia's Asian American Dreams.
"We Are Gaysian, This Is Our Mantra"
We are Asian, gay, and proud.
This is our mantra.
We will not be invisible.
We will not be your model minority.
We will stand with our brown brothers, sisters, siblings, and communities against discrimination of all kinds.
What happens to one of us happens to all of us.
Our people will not be erased from history.
We will not be defined by your words or images, nor limited by your stereotypes.
We will fight back and overcome.
Our identities and stories will not be taken from us.
We will not be submissive.
We will not be quiet.
We will not accept the status quo as long as our communities, all of those of people of color, are oppressed.
We will fight for change.
We do not need saviors for we have our own strengths, wisdom, and leadership.
Our roots run deep and will not be appropriated.
We are diverse in culture, language, class, race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality.
Yet we are united in our differences.
We will not be outsiders in our own societies.
We will storm out of the closet, shatter the glass ceiling, and tear down racial divides.
We are our own heroes and heroines in our American dreams.
