[story in a box] blackness of the desert

Apr 13, 2013 10:31

Liz told me this story while we were driving back from Uluru.

"When I was younger, I worked in one of the smaller communities a few hours from Alice Springs. On the weekends, my truck driver friend would pick me up while he was driving through the town on his runs and drop me off at Alice Springs. And then on Sundays on his way back, he'd pick me up again and drop me off back at my place. One time, while we were out on the road, his truck had a breakdown. We were in the middle of nowhere, so he had to call the truck driver who'd be doing the run the next morning to come by with the parts we needed to fix the truck. This meant that we had to spend the night in the truck in the desert. I remember it being silent, no sounds at all, and it freaked me out. I was sleeping in the front and I got out of the truck to clear my head. I hadn't taken more than 10 steps away from the truck - I turned around and I literally could not see the truck. It was that dark. All I could see was a truck shaped hole of pure black in the stars behind. And I had to use that to find my way back to the truck."
