warning for Etsy users

Etsy apparently published both the real names and purchase histories of buyers.

The changes are retroactive to all prior Etsy users. My 2009 purchase - my only activity on the site - popped up in a Google Alert for my name. I’ve since closed my account ( Read more... )

What IS it with on-line companies being so disgusting when it comes to their customer's privacy? What?

What is so damn hard about announcing "Hey we're going to do X and if you don't like it do Y and your privacy will be protected."

Argh.

And I am not even on Etsy. But I have friends who are.

I'm not sure why they can't say "Hey if you want X, change Y so you'll be involved."

Opt-in should be mandatory policy. No one should be able to screw with your data and then force you to retract it. That would of course, kill Facebook entirely, but that might not be a bad thing.

You're right, it should be opt-in, not opt-out. And that's not even hard to do, and yet every freakin' internet based company acts as if it's the hardest thing in the world to do. Double Argh.

And it would kill Facebook. And even though I'm on it, I wouldn't care at that point.
