Cause my poor darling is having herself Quite A Day today.

More from the babyfic verse

John bounced up and down on the balls of his feet impatiently. "We could just-"

"No."

"But he's so-"

"No, John."

Elizabeth shot him a stern look, and even from across the room, it still held enough power to make him shut up.

They both returned their attention to Nathaniel, who was lying on a blanket in the middle of the floor of their quarters. Elizabeth was sitting at her desk on one side of the room. John was standing on the other side, having just come from the bathroom when he noticed something.

Nathaniel was turned almost completely onto his side. His legs were tangled up, which was the only thing keeping him from really turning over. He'd gotten close to this a couple times before, but never made it completely onto his stomach.

Nathaniel rocked back and forth and let out a frustrated noise and John bounced again. A tiny push would send the baby over, but Elizabeth insisted he had to do it for himself.

The baby settled onto his back and John thought this maybe wasn't the day. Elizabeth even leaned back in her chair and seemed ready to turn back to her paperwork. But Nathaniel abruptly rocked again, his legs in the right order this time, and flipped all the way onto his stomach.

There was a moment of silence, followed by a terrified wailing.

Elizabeth scooped the baby up and kissed his cheek. "Hey boyo, you're okay." She looked up at John, who had come across the room, and smiled a little. "Guess he panicked when the world moved, huh?"

"Just a bit." John rubbed Nathaniel's back. The baby turned his head and looked at John. "What's the matter, buddy?"

Nathaniel let out a tiny little sigh. John could've sworn he was already playing them for sympathy.

Elizabeth stood up. "It's almost time for his supper anyway." John took the baby when Elizabeth held him out and Nathaniel wriggled a bit before settling himself on John's shoulder. "We'll have to do something to celebrate," she said with a little smile. "Big milestone and all that."

"Elizabeth, he flipped over. He's not exactly going off to college."

"This is the first step. Rolling over, then getting up, then crawling, then walking," she reminded him. "I'll go get dinner ready." She touched Nathaniel's head gently before leaving.

John looked down at his son, thinking about what Elizabeth had said. Nathaniel clung to one of John's fingers, looking up at him. "No need to rush through all that, okay?" John said quietly.

Nathaniel smiled and let out a little noise.
