Ronon Dex is the captain of a ship operating in the West Indies, acting as a privateer on behalf of the rebelling American colonies, empowered to raid and attack British shipping and military vessels. Ronon reports to Captain John Sheppard, who took command of one of the few American military vessels when its former captain, Marshall Sumner, was killed in battle with a British ship in the North Atlantic.

Sheppard is collecting a group of privateers to liberate Ronon's home, the island of Pegasus, from British control, in order to gain the access to the protected harbor for American and French vessels. But the current governor of the island, Lord Michael Kenmore, sends word that he has taken Ronon's sister Teyla hostage. He will only release her if Ronon kills Sheppard.

In a desperate attempt to regain some sort of leverage against Michael, Ronon attempts to kidnap one of the governor's daughters. But a mistake is made, and a woman named Elizabeth Weir is brought to the ship instead. After a good ten minutes of listening to the woman berating and reviling him while his crew attempts not to laugh openly, Ronon gags Elizabeth and shoves her into his quarters and locks her in. He can't return her home right away because he must make a planned rendezvous with Sheppard.

Over the course of the next few days Ronon and Elizabeth yell at one another a lot. He also learns that she just arrived in Pegasus after her parents arranged for her to marry a wealthy British loyalist who is closely allied with Lord Michael, a doctor named Simon Wallace. Elizabeth is a staunch American patriot and keeps stopping short of demanding Ronon send her home because she does not want to marry a crown sympathizer. Elizabeth begins to realize that Ronon's wild appearance and gruffness are more habit than a mark of any defects in his character, and that he is holding his crew together by force of will because he's loyal to Sheppard and the United States, even though the ship has yet to score a catch and make any money.

Ronon explains to John that Michael has demanded his death, and that Teyla has been taken prisoner. John comes up with a rather wild plan to put out word of his own death, but sneak onto Pegasus and see if he can get Teyla free from Michael's hold while Ronon and John's first lieutenant, Evan Lorne, lead the invasion.

Unknown to them, Teyla has managed to escape, with the help of the former governor's widow, Lady Katherine, and Mistress Laura Cadman, who does washing and sewing in the harbor town (and is the sometime paramour of Lt. Lorne). Teyla and Laura reach safety at the home of a wealthy Scottish doctor, Carson Beckett, who is spying for the Americans and feeding information to Sheppard to help wrest the island from the hated British.

Elizabeth, having heard a number of lurid stories about pirates, thinks that perhaps if her purity is spoiled by a pirate, Simon won't be willing to marry her. But Ronon doesn't force himself on her and she rather confusedly finds herself attempting to lure him. Ronon's resistance doesn't last very long, but in the hours leading up to the invasion, he fears for Elizabeth's safety. He convinces her to go ashore with him briefly and when she falls asleep, he leaves her in a sheltered cove near Beckett's house. Ronon doesn't speak to anyone, and thus doesn't learn that Teyla is safe and John is walking into a trap.

...and that's as far as I got and I have stuff to do! :)
