Mientkiewicz got hurt lastnite during the game against the Blue Jays. He has a strained shoulder cuz he slid head first which was not the brightest thing to do.
Not only that, but he really did himself in by continuing to play after the injury. Granted, he made a fantastic in-the-air catch at first for the out, it was visible (by the look on his face) that he was in a lot of pain. He finished himself off at bat and really pulled on that shoulder.
So, it was good that he didn't play tonight. Although, I would like to add that the more I listen to local sports radio, the more I hear accolades to Doug. Everybody loves him and knows what an integral part of the Red Sox he's become; fans want him at 1B every single night (rather than Millar or McCarty), and I agree completely. When Doug plays, the team is on fire. One announcer stated that he saw Doug play in the olympics, and that Doug "has passion." That's precisely what all of us see in him, and have seen for a while. Duh! :)
