My review of
this event last night:
More than anything, guys, it made me miss college. When "Rest In Peace" came on, I had this distinct flashback to A.W. singing in his very best southern drawl in the shower (and in the hallway, and in the grotto, and in his room). There was a preshow, which included a montage of Riley scenes set to "Coin Operated Boy" by the Dresden Dolls.
wordchick, you have to see it to believe it. I missed the night Conversations with Dead People aired and
foxholeatheist and I stole a prefrosh named Cecily (Not even joking - THAT WAS HER NAME!) so she could catch up at 4am. Even though I started watching in high school, I don't think I realized how much Buffy defined my college experience until I watched this episode for the first time *ever* away from school.
The comparisons to Rocky are kind of inevitable. Evidently there's some kind of war between Rocky regulars and Buffy regulars. I heard several loud comments degrading the Rocky Horror Picture Show - which I thought was ridiculous. Rocky is the touchstone of audience participation films - true that the costumes, callbacks and even the general crowd atmosphere is very very different - but Rocky did it first (and originally probably did it better). Show some respect. I had to fight the urge to shout Rocky-esque lines - my favorite Rocky callbacks are the ones that fit into the pauses and either contradict what the characters are saying or predict the next shot. They're definitely not at that level yet - but I'm sure with time those lines will evolve.
On the other hand, it's a lot more fun to sing along with Buffy than with Rocky (no offense), it's more rewarding musically - it sounds GREAT when 200 people are screaming "wish i could STAAAAAAAAAY!" (and some successfully harmonizing) - and even better when 200 kazoos are blasting the notes to "I wish I was in Heaven" (to keep Buffy on key).
The prom was awesome, my date and I did NOT win Prom King & Queen, but that's all right. Geeks throw the best parties. If you go to a normal party, and they start playing Flock of Seagulls, chances are 1 in 10 that someone is actually going to get up and dance. Throw Buffy fans in a room, and they're probably going to dance, sing, and grind with a guy in a bunny suit. I think I forgot how much fun it was to get dressed up, run around outside in the cold, and dance like an idiot. Damn I miss college.
Even so, I kept thinking about how much better Alpha Delt would do it (and DID do it). Sweet was a puppet, not a live person. Their Giles lacked Gilesy charisma. Their post-show trivia contest was random, and their "class protector award" pretty much went to this one girl because she and her friends were cute. We'd do it better. Yes, that's a challenge.
Also, I now have a question for Joss when he comes to campus next month. (Next month! AAAH!)
