I'm going to try leaving some of my entries open to the public and see how it goes. If I have more people telling me I have an "imaginary husband" (I can come up with better, trust me!!) again, I'm closing back up!!
This year, there's a girl in the 3rd grade at one of my schools who is deaf. She has hearing aids in both ears, but they tell me she cant really hear much anyway. She went to a special school up until now. I dont know why she's in public school now. It must be hard for her and the teacher too. She's not going to get anything out of my English lessons, but she still seems to enjoy them anyway. I use alot of gestures in my classes normally. I want her to at least understand what's going on. The other day I was teaching days of the week and weather. Days of the week are hard to get just from flashcards, so I learned how to "say" them in Japanese sign language. I worked on it for a month! But it was nice to see the flash of understanding in her eyes.
I want to learn some more. Some of her classmates are really into it. Everyone can at least sign their name. One girl asked me in sign language "Do you like English? Hate it? So-so?" I went around all day signing my name, so I wouldnt forget!
The hard thing is, it's JAPANESE sign language, so with any instructions I have to deal with the first language barrier. I'm trying to find a sign book aimed at kids (I figure I have a better chance of understanding it!). Just looking on Amazon, I have no idea what to buy. I may have to wait until I have time (which is NEVER) to hit a real bookstore. I've been looking on Youtube for now, but havent found quite what I'm looking for. I found one person who does both American/Japanese sign language lessons on Youtube, but her audience is deaf people so they already know one or the other. She signs too fast!
