It's really not that awful at all, and to be honest, that exact thought was my saving grace when I wrote the story. (Even though I made Remus suffer in pain, but the situation sort of demanded it). I am a sap! :)
I've only been a passenger on this ship for six months (I only started reading HP fanfic in August, 2004) - and my ticket came by way of an epiphany when I read a S/R fanfic. (a not very good one over at FFN, I might add, and thought that I could definitely do better, but that's besides the point!) They had always been my two favorite characters since reading POA, and I practically kicked myself for not having thought of it sooner. It's not that I was ever diametrically opposed to slash before, but the pairing had to make sense within the context of the medium for me to embrace it. Obviously I'm a lot more open minded now, and I can always appreciate a well written (internally consistent) story, but there are still certain pairings that will never really appeal to me.

I've been in this fandom for a bit under one year and found it when a few authors whose work I liked in anime fandoms wrote for the pair. But I do see what you're saying - my first exposure to slash was ages ago, in the Forever Knight fandom. (Remember that show?) The slash pairing just made more sense. I might never have read the first stories if the idea hadn't clicked in my brain as - wow, that should have been really obvious! ^__^

Same here... Some dynamics work - and some just really, really don't...I've a much longer list of pairings I can't stand to read than I do pairings I like...
