Good luck moving up 'cause I'm moving out

Well, temporarily that is! :-P

Yes, Irene is coming, and yes, I live at the beach. How close to the beach?

THIS CLOSE!!! See that white T-shaped building in the center? That would be me. And hey - who knew the Long Island Banjo Society was right across the street from me!

So, in deference to "safety first", I'll be heading to my sister's house tomorrow morning. As opposed to the aesthetic desire to stay and watch the storm approach from over the ocean, because that always looks so cool!

Also, my niece and nephew emailed and called me yesterday, begging me to come over because they were worried. (The best kind of blackmail. :-P) The City of LB and Nassau County have both called several times in the past two days, and strongly suggested voluntary evacuation. Of course my mother is freaking out about everything. Sure, we're all concerned, since we don't know what we'll be getting just yet, but full out panic is not all that helpful.

I've already moved stuff off the floor in my office room - piled it all on the couch and covered it with a blanket - just in case of flooding/window breakage. I'll be putting down towels everywhere beneath windows and in front of my terrace door, and of course I brought in my terrace furniture. Well, one chair is still out there. I'll get that in a bit.

They've been driving big trucks with plow things on the beach all day. I imagine they're trying to build up the dunes beneath the boardwalk to combat some of the potential storm surge. There are some pretty hefty waves out there right now, and if they look big from my window, I'm sure they're even larger down there. The surfers are out in full force.

My father gave me enough batteries to power 10 flashlights for at least a week. Alas, I only have two. And I'll only be taking the cool lantern one to my sister's. (Just in case.) But man, I wish he'd told me to buy stock in Duracell before he went shopping.

Hmmm. One of my neighbors is outside cutting plywood with a buzz saw. Not quite sure how he intends to nail plywood to cover windows set into a metal frame on a brick building, but I'm sure he'll be creative with it. Maybe he has a lot of duct tape! :-P

(That reminds me. I have a window with a propensity to leak up top in really heavy rain. I should duct tape that. Heh. It certainly can't hurt.)

In the event that we do lose power, my brother-in-law has a generator, but how shallow am I in that my first thought is that I hope Irene cools things off so I don't melt without air conditioning and fans! And my second thought is "Woe! No Intrawebs!" Who cares if I can't shower for days if I don't have internet!!!

Alas, they cancelled Arthur Ashe Kids Day at the US Open, so no Feli swooning for me. Josh was very disappointed as well. He wanted to meet Roger and Rafa and tell them that he beats them all the time on his Wii.

But, despite all that, NEW DOCTOR WHO TOMORROW!!! \o/ \o/ \o/ Yay Ponds!

Oh! I bought a new car yesterday! But I'm not picking it up until Tuesday after Irene passes, because I don't want to tempt fate to drop a tree on it or carry it away in a flood. More on that in a later post.

I have to run out to Walgreens and pick up my foot fungus cream. There was already a run on bottled water over the past two days, and the gas stations are packed. I have lots of water, a full tank of gas, $200 in cash, my toothbrush, clean underwear, and a lifetime supply of D and AA batteries. And a roll of duct tape. And insurance. And shortly I will have fungus cream. Am I prepared or what?! Bring it on!
