They didn't have this stuff on TV when I was six.
I am hopelessly behind - between hp_springsmut, snarry_games, work (bleh), feeding my Saiyuki addiction, trying to keep up with my flist, feeding my Saiyuki addiction, family, and just general "other stuff", (and did I mention Saiyuki?) I despair of ever clearing out my inbox.
But I had to share with you an "incident" that happened last night when I was out at my sister's. I was watching Doctor Who with Hannah (almost 7) and Josh (4) on BBC America. (Smith and Jones) Josh fell asleep, because it was past his bedtime, but Hannah was totally into it. ("Where did the hospital go? Are they bad guys? Why is she drinking his blood? Is he going to die? Why is he an alien? He looks human. Are they going to get off the moon? Are they all going to die? Is there more kissing?")
So my sis took Josh up to sleep, and since it was the weekend, Hannah stayed up a bit longer. And of course, Torchwood came on at 9. It was the first ep - Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. I was going to turn it off, but Hannah wanted to watch it, and well, she's been watching LoTR and PoTC and stuff for ages with us, and I figured I'd just distract her during the really violent bits. So... as most of you know, there was one part where two male characters kiss.
"They're kissing? Boys?" And she grabs the remote from my hand and hits rewind. And watches them kiss again. And again. And again. (By this time she's off the couch and laying on the floor in front of the telly, and when I said, "okay, that's enough kissing", her reply was, "One more time! *rewinds*")
Of course that led to a discussion of how some boys like to kiss girls, and others like to kiss boys, and some like to kiss both. (and same with girls)
"But why?"
"Because that's who they like."
"Oh, well I like Tyler but I didn't kiss him on the lips..."
"You're six, you shouldn't be kissing anyone on the lips."
"I kissed Jack on the lips last year, and my best friend (can't remember her name) kissed (can't remember boy's name) on the lips, and my other friend Hannah kissed (boy's name), too, and...(lists more kissing incidents among her friends). But I don't think I want to kiss any girls on the lips."
"That's okay. You kiss who you like. The whole point is that it's okay to like who you like, and kiss who you like. But not until you're a lot older or else your Dad is going to chain you up in the basement uh, not be very happy."
"I like Tyler! He's soooooo cute!"
Whoa boy. I hope my sister is ready for this! :-P
She only watched part of the episode, though - pretty much up to that point, since we started talking about "kissing", but now she said she wants to watch more because she likes the boys kissing each other. Maybe she got some of the same genes I have after all! *g*
I think we'll just stick to Doctor Who for now, though - she likes Rose and Martha, and it's less violent. Well, comparatively.
(And I'm totally wondering if she'll remember all this come tomorrow and tell her friends at school. Heh.)
