shooting stars and speeding cars

I have so much I want to post about - particularly Prophecy last week, including the speedy 9 1/2 hour drive up, and the 17 hours odyssey home (via Niagra Falls, which also included two Con stragglers that we picked up for the ride home. :-P), and fic that I want to write but can't seem to get started on. It saddens me that our two glorious summer cons and the long anticipated release of Deathly Hallows - even the potential Potterdammerang - have been eclipsed by a big honking bucket of splooge. The 6A mess has been exhausting, and not just for me - I see it all over my flist.

Yes, I've set up shop at three other journals and backed up my LJ there (*note to self, go find two part fics and fix the links between the posts! And fix the tags!) and yes, I'm now using semagic to post simultaneously at all four of my journals, but I'm not packing up and leaving LJ. Not yet. My paid account runs out in January, so we'll see how things develop over the next few months before I make any decisions on that front. For the record, LiveJournal remains my primary journal, and InsaneJournal is my secondary.

I've been doing a bunch of administrative stuff over at hp_springsmut, including opening a mirror account at InsaneJournal. Nothing there yet, but we may transfer entries later. If you haven't seen my posts yet, and you're a former participant (from any year) or just a watcher, please take a moment to visit the comm and join, or let us know if you have any fic you want locked.

This weekend is the annual Perseid Meteor Shower for those who live in the northern hemisphere and are not impeded by city lights or cloudy skies. This year's new moon make conditions even more ideal. The Perseids are one the two biggest annual showers (the other is the Geminids in mid-December) and it's basically the earth traversing through the dusty sheddings of comet Swift-Tuttle. (Don't worry, the comet isn't anywhere near us. :-P) The meteors will radiate from the northeast, and the best way to view them is to lay back, feet pointing northeast towards the constellation Casseopeia (which looks like a sideways "W" and is easier to spot than Perseus), look straight up and watch peripherally.

I was out last night watching - well, I should say I tried to watch. Apparently there was some Big Deal going on down at the beach - low flying helicopters passing all night, police cars on the beach and boardwalk, and even Coast Guard boats coming in close to shore. Last time I saw something like that, someone had drowned. Not wanting to go the dead body route, I was happily composing stories of drug runners bringing their contraband to shore S.E.A.L-like from the big ship that was anchored a few miles out (and rather brightly lit for late night), and I was so distracted, I wasn't even paying attention to the meteors. I WAS paying attention to the cops in the 4x4 barrelling down the beach though, and good thing. Getting run over was definitely not on my list of things to do before I die. I was also fancifully looking for a black rubber raft manned by gun-toting drug runners. Didn't really fancy meeting them, either.

Hmm. That ship is still out there, and there are an awful lot of small boats flitting close to shore, too, and they don't look like they're fishing. Right. Time to squelch the imagination. Just a teeny bit.

ETA: Happy Birthday, emmagrant01!!
