Okay first start off with your cropping. I have a lovely pic of one my favorite ships, Hyde/Jackie from That '70s Show. This is about 70x100 not your average 100x100, which can get boring.

Next go to Canvas size and make your canvas 100x100 and fill in the remaining part of your icon with black, because its fun.

Now duplicate your base, and set the new layer to screen. Duplicate the layer again and bring it to the very top and set that to soft light. I now have:

Better huh? But I don't like the orangness of it, so make a color balance layer, which can be found Layer> New Adjusment Layer > Color Balance.

Set the color balance midtones to -60 in cyan and +50 in blue. Thats it for the color balance, I now have:

Next a new layer with the color: B5E4F1 and set it to 60, color burn.

Now we add the fun lines. Pretty much all I did was pick a color from the icon, and make a 5 pt line on it. Then went a few shades lighter with 4 pt line. Then few shades lighter with a  3 pt line, and so on till you get to one.

If you don't want to deal with it all just define this as a brush and paint it on with any color you like, it doesn't exactly have the same effect, but it works. :)
