Jamerican
This weekend I went to visit my family over in Palm Beach. My mom has finally gotten her birth center all finished and was having a grand opening. I got to see all my sisters and brothers, I only see them about once or so a year. They're all taller than I am now (well all except for the little ones). I have 4 sisters and 3 brothers, 2 of my brothers are in their early teens and they fucking tower over me, I'm 5'7 mind you. 2 of my sisters are also taller than me, ones 5'10! I'm the oldest and it's crazy to see them getting big and mouthy...not that they haven't always been mouthy. I'm the quiet one of the family and Im only quiet at first. Shawn came with me and got to meet some of my aunts that he hasn't met yet. My grandpa's sister was there with her kids and so was most of her family. There was a moment that we all were sitting together and my sister was talking about how she's always asked if she's spanish, my moms cousin was asked her if she ever tells anyone that she's Jamaican. She said "well yeah if they ask, but I'm American too, I'm Jamerican". I guess Im not the only person getting the are you spanish question. When people look at me and ask me "what are you", I've always said my moms Jamaican, and I've gotten the "but you're so light" several times. So for those of you who don't, my mom is Jamaican, her father was Jamaican and yes he was black, and his family had been Jamaican for several generations back. Im Jamerican and damned proud of it. It was where I remember growing up, it's where I learned to talk. It was my first home.
