I realized this afternoon how much I use landmarks to navigate around when I'm travelling anywhere. Visual cues that tell me where I am on the map, like the mountains over there on the North shore, which allow me to figure out whether I'm going north, south, east or west. I know my way around the part of the city I usually frequent, but occasionally I get thrown into a slightly unfamiliar path, like the detour I had to take the other day. I found my way back to the main street by heading towards the mountains. Street names and numbers are good, but not as important as the landmarks. When one of those landmarks vanishes, it confuses me to no end...like the building that just disappeared one day leaving a big open space behind. I almost thought I was on the wrong road!
Today I had to drop some papers off at a location in Langley on my way home from the farm. Found the place, dropped off the papers, and then figured I'd just take one of the alternate routes home..except that somehow my sense of north and south wasn't working, and I ended up going north on Fraser highway instead of south, and ended up pretty much back where I started from. Talk about going round in circles. LOL.
Traffic was just horrible - took me over 2 hours to drive 45km. Most of the time I didn't even need to touch the gas peddle, just coasted along. Thank heavens for air conditioning. Stanley Schnauzer and I would have melted into puddles without it.
I really really want a helicopter, so I can soar over all those suckers stuck in traffic. Or a transporter..just beam me over, Scotty!
