I was recently contacted by a journalist who wanted to talk about the "Twilight" series, as well as some of the romance/fantasy/supernatural story books that seem to be all over Borders these days. Has the growing popularity of such stuff, I was asked, boosted interest in the goth scene? And how have D.C. goths reacted to such lit and flicks? Are they excited that "New Moon" hits the theaters this week, or do they consider it fluff--"90210" with some spooky characters?
While I haven't seen "Twilight," my impression from the reviews, trailers, and a few conversations with folks who did is that its underlying message was that vampires are just like "normal" people. Some are good, some are bad, and some are teenage sex symbols. Say what?! Maybe I'm just old and stuffy, but I prefer my critters of the night to be, well, horrible, symbols of dread and terror. Can you imagine Bela Lugosi hanging around the schoolyard, checking out the chicks, and doffing his shirt at the drop of a bat? Uh, no.
Any thoughts?
