Tuesday, June 9, is the Democratic primary election date in Virginia. Regardless of which polls you believe about who's on first, the contest for the gubernatorial nomination is probably a close one...
Of the three candidates, Terry McAuliffe--whose qualifications for the job are pretty minimal at best, although you've got to give him credit, I guess, for suggesting chicken shit (I kid you not) in one of his mailings as being a major solution for the state's future energy needs--has been counting on out-of-state money and his connections with the (barf!) Clintons to smash the competition. Brian Moran has a great record on the whole, but he's become so desperate to win that he's ventured into serious dubious negative campaigning. (See the WASHINGTON POST's 6/6 editorial, for example.) If we took one of his latest mailings seriously (I've been buried in crap from all these guys), the implication is that Virginia voters should have rejected the third Democratic candidate, State Sen. Creigh Deeds, in his race against 2009 GOP gubernatorial choice Bob McDonnell in the Attorney General contest four years ago because Deeds received the NRA endorsement. Say what?!!
On Tuesday I'm voting for Deeds, who has a 100% rating from NARAL on abortion issues, high marks from both the Virginia Education Association and the state AFL-CIO, and the POST endorsement. Considering that he represents one of the state's rural districts, where baseball caps outnumber power suits, he has a pretty consistent voting record that shows real guts and a genuine understanding of the state's future needs.
There's also a contest for Lt. Governor that's gotten little coverage in the press. I recommend voting for Signer, who's the progressive choice, over Wagner. Neither has much of a public record, but Signer has shown that he has the sort of fire in the belly that will put the boring and largely unknown GOP incumbent, who won by a thin margin four years back, on the defensive this fall.
