Memorial service today (Sunday, 11/9) for Louisa Hanley

Nov 09, 2008 06:28

It's been a while since Louisa Hanley qualified as a regular at the local gothic scene parties; but those of you who, like me, remember the days of Catacomb, Nocturnia, Midian, Nation, and my/their after-parties will undoubtedly recall her.

She wasn't much of a dancer--although NIN or Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence" would usually lure her out onto the floor. Her musical tastes were broader than just the scene material. We were both fans of the Goo Goo Dolls, for instance, and once caught one of their concerts in NJ. For a little while she and I hit the clubs together on a regular basis, although we were never more than just good friends. I helped her move into her first apartment, and I'll never forget counting the speed bumps all the way through the complex and the number of tragic-looking abandoned cats hanging around the dumpsters whenever I went to pick her up there.

Louisa's accidental death on Halloween night is a tragedy that leaves me and her innumerable other friends feeling numb. For some of us, it's even more stunning since we got to see and speak with her the evening before at Exposure. That night she seemed to be in good spirits, happy to be out partying again, and looking forward to doing so more frequently in the future. Fate dictated otherwise.

Today there's going to be a memorial service for Louisa's gothic friends to attend from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Hidden Creek Country Club (1711 Clubhouse Road, Reston, VA 20190). Afterwards her friends Dirk and Erica will be holding a wake at 3617 Prosperity Avenue, in Fairfax.

Condolences should be directed to The Hanleys, 11243 Handlebar Road, Reston, VA 20191.
