For a young kid with bright eyes, as bright as his hopes, playing for Real Madrid is a dream and he knows he deserves it with how well he has been playing. Fernando doesn’t know what to expect yet he does at the same time. This is a club with prestige and honour, with titles and trophies. He knows they expect nothing but his best and he knows he will give nothing less.

However that isn’t to say he isn’t scared shitless when he enters Valdebebas. He sees the men, the strong standing tall men, who won the Champions League, the men he is now to call teammates. Fernando doesn’t find it surprising that he feels like a boy.

Training is training. Drills don’t change, or not by much anyway. Everyone is friendly enough even if it just on the surface. It goes by quick and at the end when he is charging back to the change room, hands pat him on the back in a welcome and congratulatory way. One hand however grabs him by the shoulder and pulls him back. He should be surprised when he sees Raul Gonzalez, all smiles, but it isn’t.

“You were great in training today.”

Fernando smiles and takes the proffered hand in his own. Though he isn’t feeling strained, Raul carries this relaxing presence that calms him even further.

“Thank you.”

“Do you want to go for lunch? Is your hotel nearby? We can drop your stuff off then go?”

It’s pure and genuine, just like Fernando’s laugh. He nods and accepts. “Lead the way.”

If he allowed himself to look back on this day years later when Real Madrid came and went as did Liverpool, Valencia and Marseille, he would say that was the day he truly fell in love with football, with his best friend for so many years. But he wouldn’t look back because he had been taught to look forward and never dwell on memories of what should have been.
