He sighs into the phone too tired, too old to deal with this shit.
“No Guti I am not going to come to Ibiza.”
“Why not? You said you wanted to get away for a little while... Is it Mamen? Just tell her you are meeting up with me. Come on, Raul you could stand to get away from Madrid for a little while.”
Raul brings his hand up to face and rubs at his skin. It’s feels wrinkly and aged. Old.
“I am not going so you can feel a little bit better about running around with one of friend’s ex girlfriends, okay? What are you doing, Jose Maria? Really please tell me.”
He should have expected it and maybe deep in his conscious he did but the sound of Guti - his long time friend and lover - yelling has Raul regretting his words.
“Fuck you, Raul! I wanted and still do for you to be here. I don’t give a shit about her, not more than her just being a friend which is more than I can say for you right now.”
“Guti...”
“No forget it. Bye Raul.”
Sighing again, Raul disconnects the call and stares at his phone. At least he got a farewell of some sort.
Guti is fucking stubborn and Raul can be too.

“So are you coming?”
Raul closes his eyes not only to block out the sunlight that shines on his face as he sits outside with his children but his inner voice that is asking him why he hasn’t just given in yet.
“Guti...”
“She left, Raul. I promise she’s not here anymore. Just... come please? I am only going to stay for a few more days. Raul... Please.”
And like that his mind is made up.
“Of course.”

The drive to Guti’s beach house is quiet. No music. No buzzing of phones. Just Raul and his thoughts. Why is he in Ibiza and ultimately giving into Guti’s wishes he has no idea. Raul is different; he doesn’t like to get caught up in other people’s personal lives and business. If Guti wants to fuck around with friend’s (ex) girlfriends that is up to him. Though really Raul is only fooling himself for thinking along those lines when he has experienced enough to know that is never the case.
He has been here before of course. Many times (perhaps too many). Say what you will about Ibiza but Raul knows how much Guti loves it. The sun, the people, the atmosphere. It’s all so different from Madrid and though neither man will ever be anonymous anywhere in Spain, Guti feels the most comfortable in Ibiza.
When Raul gets to the front door he doesn’t knock or use a key he doesn’t have. Instead he just simply twists the knob and pushes it open, knowing how his blond friend is. Carefree.
Raul doesn’t call out for him right away. He just walks inside quietly and takes a look around. Everything is exactly the same. Beautiful artworks on white walls, clean surfaces, white pristine couches. It’s one hundred percent Jose Maria Gutierrez.
It doesn’t take him long to walk up the stairs though he trails his fingers up the wood railing as he goes. The air is heavy with the scent of sea salt and spicy cologne and when he gets closer to Guti’s room he realizes why is here.
Guti is on the bed with his legs bent (hold a magazine Raul sees later once he gets a better view), his back resting against the headboard. His eyes only flicker up for a second before it takes him a moment to realize Raul is really standing in front of him. Guti then tosses the magazine to the side before patting a spot on the mattress next to him. Raul of course obliges.
“So...”
“Look,” Guti interrupts immediately. They haven’t embraced or acknowledged each other’s presence besides speaking. “I just wanted a vacation okay? Nothing else. I asked you so many times but you kept saying no. So I asked her and she agreed right away.”
Raul nods, his eyes serious though his lips curve into a slight smile. “I know. It’s just that with everything else going on I don’t need to add more issues especially ones of girlfriends and what not.” He reaches for Guti’s hand, lacing their fingers together. “Forget it. I’m here for two days now.”
“Two days, Raul? That’s all you can afford for me?” Guti teases as he leans forward for a chaste kiss. His skin glows in the fading sunlight and Raul cannot help but stroke the corner of his lips with his thumb.
“You pulled me away from my kids, Guti. Two days is more than enough.”
Guti laughs as he closes the distance between their bodies properly. “When we get back home I’ll bring my kids over okay?” He licks at Raul’s smiling lips. “To make up for stealing their Papa away for two whole days.”
Raul just laughs. A much needed two day vacation.
