More times than not a player on the circuit will say tennis is a lonely sport. With all the traveling and going in and out of different hotel rooms, it may just be a truth. Most players however would attest to not caring when they are younger - when they first break into the sport because it’s just a little sacrifice towards the ultimate goal.
When you’re older however - considered a veteran of the sport - you wonder why you still do it; why you chose to continue playing and being ultimately alone.
Everyone has the same goal as you. And this is where friends - companions - become enemies. You are too old for this, to play game off the court.
“You’re thinking too much, Gatito.”
His soft laughter falls over you, his breath warming your ear as he presses against you from behind. Another hotel room, another unfamiliar bed but at least you’re not alone this time. You wouldn’t hesitate in calling him your best friend, not Mariano.
“Isn’t that always the case?”
“Well then stop.”
This time it’s your turn to laugh. If only it were that easy. You don’t turn around but reach back for his hand instead and drape it around your waist. He curls it around you immediately and it makes you smile.
Years have gone by; things change as do people. But Mariano is still the same boy who you met on the tennis courts back in Tandil. He’s only a year older than you (he insists he practically has two years on you) but he treats you like a younger brother. He doesn’t take your friendship for granted, never has and he appreciated the fact (loved actually) that he was one of the first people you contacted when you needed help with the depression. He didn’t judge, didn’t make assumptions. Just listened and that’s when you realised.
“Seriously Gaston stop thinking and go to sleep. But if it’s still on your mind in the morning - and you know I will know if it - then you’re going to tell me okay?”
You just laugh softly before pulling him a little closer to you. Your thoughts can wait until the morning.
