summary: simply a friendship that progressed.

this is for the ever lovely winter_solstice! happy birthday once again love :) writing this made me nervous but i really and truly hope you like this (if not, i'll try again!)

It started off simply enough; a friendship that sparked on the pitch, through a smile that broke down defences. Initially they were partnered up in training though through the years they naturally gravitated towards each other. They won together; they lost together. On away games, they roomed together. Naturally, it was hard for them to be anything but friends. However, no one knew the how far the extent of their friendship would truly become.

The kiss was simple as well. It was just another day, a day that could have easily been blended with the others. Training had ended for the day with the blazing Spanish sun bearing down on them. Fernando followed Raul to his place in his car, an activity that had long become a routine. Raul began to prepare the food, something simple enough before they enjoyed each other’s company on Raul’s patio.

When the day was slowly dispersing into the evening, the friends had decided to call it a night (as there was training the next morning). Their embraces were never just a lean in and a touch of the body. Rather, it was a full press that connected their hearts for five or six short-lived seconds. Fernando gently pressed his lips against Raul’s cheek, like he did hundreds of times before. And in a split second he could never explain why except for the fact that it felt like an instinct, Raul had brushed his lips against Fernando’s as he pulled away from his cheek. Fernando didn’t say anything, just stared at his friend until he felt Raul’s fingers on his neck. Then he was being pulled in close into an embrace that felt nothing less than natural and their lips met again.

A soft press of lips, fingers in unruly hair, the kiss was tentative to say the least until Raul took a chance (not before silently reciting a little prayer, mind you) and licked the bottom of Fernando’s tongue. Instead of the expected reaction however, Fernando pulled back. His eyes were searching something (and when he had thought about it later, he never knew what he was seeking) before he leaned in for another kiss, just another press of lips. He said goodnight to his friend quietly before letting himself out of Raul’s home.

What proceeded the kiss was simple (for a while at least). Their routine of having lunch after training together had come to include kisses that led to exploring each other in a way they had never before believed possible. Fernando’s skin was softer than Raul had expected. The quiet noises Raul made pressed buttons in Fernando didn’t know existed. Their bodies soon learned to become familiar with each other like they had on the pitch. Whether soft or hard, promising or unforgiving, every time they got lost in each other’s bodies, there was never a shortage of love or respect.

Life didn’t continue simply, it never did. Fernando left and though Raul didn’t agree, he understood. However, their friendship didn’t wither, didn’t die. Both men had come to terms that work had to be put in to keep them going, from both parties. They were too important to each other let their relationship, their friendship, go simply because they were no longer on the same team.

Making arrangements to meet after their teams had played against each other wasn’t simple either. There were always questions, though more on Fernando’s side. Where was he going? Why wasn’t he going to celebrate/commiserate with his team? Raul had it a little easier. All he had to do was seek out Iker’s or Guti’s eyes and they would understand. They met in more hotel rooms than they had ever had before but it didn’t matter, not when Fernando’s lips desperately sought Raul’s. When Raul finally sunk into Fernando’s body, their longing, their heartache seemed to quieten, just for a little while. In the end, that’s all that really mattered.

Every time they thought about each other when they were apart, both men knew that their lives would eventually return to simpler times, one day. Though football was forever with them, their careers weren’t. It was hard for them to come in terms with that, especially for Raul as his minutes lessened for the team he poured his sweat and tears into. It wasn’t easy but Fernando had explained to him that all those years ago, when Raul was seventeen and made the senior squad, he too had taken a veteran’s spot. It was only natural. Once football stopped, life would still go on and it would be okay because then, and only then, could Raul and Fernando be together and just simply be.
