He had a plan. Christmas was going to be perfect this year because he had a plan. Mardy was going to send Tommy a gift for each of the twelve days of Christmas. As soon as December 1st had come around, Mardy planned to go shopping so he would be able to have every gift delivered on the proper day; all according to his big brilliant plan. He however did not even take into consideration of factors that could have cut into his time.
First Andy had bitched and complained about not getting any ‘bro’ time with Mardy. It was true though; they hadn’t spent any time since the US Open and even then it was cut short. They still managed to keep in touch though; after all they weren’t just ‘tennis friends’. Their friendship began and blossomed when they were younger, teenagers who dreamed of winning slams and hearing the crowd cheer their names. Of course their friendship remained (and quite strong as well) over the years but both men have their own individuals lives. It was hard to make time for each other, no matter how hard they tried. So when Andy called him up one December day, Mardy didn’t hesitate to book a flight to New York where his friend was living with his wife. There, Mardy spent a week in the Big City, doing everyday mundane things he used to with Andy when they were younger. It was refreshing.
It was only a day before Mardy’s mother ordered him to come home to Minnesota. Because he planned to spend his actual Christmas differently than with all his aunts, uncles, cousins and his mother and father (not that he didn’t want to, he just rather be with Tommy this year), Mardy agreed and flew straight away to Minnesota, to where he grew up. He was met with familiar warmth, warmth that filled his body and senses with such happiness. Memories of being a child and opening up presents on Christmas morning overwhelmed him with every passing day that he stayed there. One thing led to another and somehow Mardy found himself at his parents’ for a whole two weeks. His younger cousins and nieces had did a perfect job of distracting him from. After much regret, Mardy left for Florida once again on the 23rd. It wasn’t until his head hit his pillow that Mardy realized his plan had been completely forgotten about.
He had two days before Christmas and no presents. So much for the 12 days of Christmas.

With a kiss to his sisters’ cheeks, Tommy said goodnight before closing the door. It was the night before Christmas and he was exhausted. Initially he had agreed to host a little get together with his close family and friends and if it weren’t for his sisters he might have regretted it. But he was lucky enough to have such a wonderful family to help him cook and clean up. He would never trade in tennis for anything but it did cut into the time he was able to spend with his family.
Making a quick detour through the kitchen, Tommy finally made his way upstairs and into his bedroom. It was nearing midnight, already too late for him. He was exhausted and wanted nothing more than sleep. After slipping out his clothes and cleaning up for the night, Tommy padded over to his bed, his eyes catching the sight of his phone flashing. Picking it up, he noticed that he had received a text message and quickly read it.
Merry Christmas, baby.
It was a short message but it made Tommy smile nonetheless. He knew Christmas time was very busy for Mardy and his family so he didn’t mind that they didn’t get a chance to even talk for a while. Tommy was about to send a message back when his doorbell rang. Looking up quickly, Tommy wondered who it could be at this hour before making his way back down the stairs. With his phone still open and clutched in one hand, Tommy opened the front door, his mouth dropping at the sight.
“Mardy?! What-”
His words were cut off as Mardy pushed him inside and pressed their lips together. His fingers dove into Mardy’s hair, his phone falling, forgotten, to the ground. Fortunately, there was a plush rug under their feet so it didn’t smash into pieces and disturb the men from reacquainting themselves. Tongues clashed and caressed with one another, lips bruising in the process. But to either man, it didn’t matter.
Hesitatingly breaking the kiss, Mardy pulls away, a small smile on his lips.
“Tommy,” he breathed as he pressed another kiss to his lips, “I... I had this plan. I swear I did. I was going to send you a gift for the twelve days before Christmas. But then Andy called me and started bitching. You know how he is. So I went to spend some time with him and then my mom called so I had to go back home and see my family. And you know-”
This time it was Tommy who cut off Mardy. He pressed a finger to his lips before dropping a quick kiss. A smile settled onto his face.
“It doesn’t matter. You’re here now. Let’s go upstairs, yeah?”
Not waiting for an answer, Tommy led the way, his hand clasped tightly with Mardy’s. He couldn’t have asked for a better gift.
