Michael reaches for a piece of juicy looking orange and slowly enjoys before turning his attention to David. Gary just sits back and waits for Michael to start, seeing how this is originally the striker’s idea.
And David worries, waiting for both men to say that they longer want anything to do with him. He doesn’t even notice that his fingers of his left hand are twisted in the napkin until Michael’s release them to entwine with his own. Gary dutifully reaches for the other.
“David… You know that I’ve never really been happy with the fact that I have had to share you. But I know that Gary’s been your best mate forever now and it’s stupid of me to think I could have you to myself,” he stops when David tries to protest. He shakes his head and continues. “Let me finish, ok? Then you can say anything and everything you want. I’ve realized that I can’t have you to myself but I can’t go on sharing you either. I still want you as my friend. I need you as my friend. I can’t imagine not having you in my life. We’re not making you choose, because I know you need Gary, maybe more than you need me. And I’ve come to terms with that.” He pauses and looks to Gary.
“But,” Gary picks up where Michael leaves off. “We’ve decided that, granted that you are ok with it of course, we would share a last night… Together.” Both men share intently at David, who looks from Gary to Michael and back again. He shakes his head in disbelief.
“T-together? The three of us?”
The striker and defender both nod to their captain with loving smiles on their faces.
“You’re not joking with me, are you? Because I don’t think I can handle that.”
“Don’t think you could handle what? Us lying to you, or being with both of us?” David looks to Gary and sees the seriousness in his eyes.
“Both of you?” He looks to Michael, knowing the younger man has never been good at lying to him. But all he sees is a reflection of Gary’s expression. David’s heart rises. “Yes.”
Michael leans in to kiss him on the cheek then moves aside to allow Gary to do the same. He feels something break inside of him but tries to push it away. Knowing David will be happy, even if it's not with him, is all Michael wants.
Gary glances at Michael, raising his brow and Michael reaches for his phone in a “sudden” rush, just like they had discussed earlier. He pretends to frown at the screen. “I really need to answer this. I’ll just be a few minutes.” Gary silently mouths a ‘thank-you’ as he walks out of the dining area.

“Becks”
David’s attention focuses solely on Gary as their eyes connect. Some say, “The eyes are the windows to our soul” and in this precise moment, David couldn’t agree more. Gary’s never failed to tell David what his words could not. David wishes that his own are doing the same.
“What Michael said is not entirely true. Don’t get me wrong, I do want the three of us together but… You need Michael, not me. We’ve been friends for a long time, longer than we’ve been together. I was the one that said it was ok for you to be with Michael in the first place. I saw and still see how happy he makes you. Even though we won’t be together, we’ll still be mates, best mates because that’s how it is. If you and Michael are no longer together… You won’t have that friendship he believes you will. It’ll hurt him and I’m sure you’d agree that he’s been hurt enough. He insists that I am meant to be with you, only because he wants you to be happy. But he doesn't realize that you make him happy. I don't think he's calculated his own happiness in this whole situation.”
David drops his gaze and his voice falters. “I- I never meant to hurt him.”
“I know.”
“Gaz, I love you.”
“I know that too, David.” Gary reaches for David’s chin with his fingers and lifts it so their eyes meet once again. “Like mates, even more. But Michael’s the one you’re in love with. I’ve realized it, it’s time that you do too.”
David eyes being to tear up a little when Gary wraps his arms around him and presses a kiss to his temples. “Nothing changes between us except the sex, because you need to belong to him, and only him. We’ll still talk like we do, still spend time and do the things we always do together. Best mates, right?” David buries his head against the strong familiar shoulder and Gary thinks he hears a muffled “right”. He smiles and holds David a little closer to him, a little tighter.

Michael stares dumbfounded as his teammate and the love of his life hold each other in an affectionate embrace. He didn’t want to interrupt, but he started to feel a little anxious standing out side the door so he came back earlier than he originally intended. Too early because clearly he was not supposed to hear those words. Did he even hear that correctly? Gary wants David to be with him? What happened to David being “Gaz’s”? When Gary’s eyes meets his, Michael feels cheeks burn and turns to leave once again.
“Michael, wait,” Gary says with a smile as he lets go of David. Michael pauses but doesn’t turn around until he hears, “Come here…please?” So he does, with wobbly legs. After he sits down, he looks down at the table as if he finds the variety of foods extremely fascinating. “I am taking a guess here… You heard what I said?”
Michael nods but still refuses to look up. But the next words has his head whipping up so fast, it would be comical if this weren’t an emotional and serious situation.
“It’s true.”
Both of the other men sharing the room have their eyes on Michael as he tries to react. He just doesn’t know how so he remains sitting. Frozen.
David sees Michael rigid body and automatically deciphers that he hates it. He reaches out and seeks comfort in Michael’s fingers. “It is true. I am in love with you. I love you, Michael James Owen.”
And Michael cracks.
