Hau'oli Makahiki Hou (2014 review)

MTPPYA

I’m 30 now, and for a large portion of my life I was ridiculed to near tears, beaten and ostracized based on my love of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, by those who care to notice I still enter the village from time to time I’m still known as “that fat power rangers girl who still liked them when she was 15.”, and so when asked about fandom’s and such I began to omit them from my list, but this year… I am out and proud I guess you could say. Several conventions have brought Rangers over to the UK for the first time ever, and 2015 will see the first UK convention dedicated solely to them.
Through this I found that someone I had met through the Starfury conventions was hiding (or not, it was more a matter of I’d not asked) a power crystal in their convention bag.

This was just me being random, we were actually at Vampire Ball but I am not very good at being random, and when I suddenly decided to tell him to morph it just kind of happened :D…. officially now I know its two someone’s because Ashley another Starfury regular saved my ass by getting me Austin St Johns autograph at a London convention I couldn’t make. I intend to buy him a beer at Faebles next month

Mon Amies
There should be a link here from Power Rangers and my childhood with the fandom to a part of my verse that isn’t fandom, that little slice of rl I held onto for years and years even though it went very cold, but I still don’t know what’s really happened here and I am not sure I ever will, there is a cloak of silence, and no one is willing to let me in despite proof in our pasts of my ability to be trusted.
I don’t mean to be cryptic, it is the crypticism that is pissing me off, but I can’t say what I don’t know.

It feels like so long ago now when I didn’t have anyone not really, I played make believe that people around me were friends and that I meant something in their worlds, they are Nadorhuan, used my unusualness for their own gains but truly I was a verse unto myself in my village, and still am pretty much, but that’s made bearable by the fact that I can now boast of real friends, people who matter and who even in a small way I matter to, I know its wrong to name names, but meh! this is just a small number of those who have make this year completely insane, dangerous, disastrous and awesome:
  • Mark I, Ashley, Niamh and the Starfury gang,
  • Rosie,
  • Lori & Sarah,
  • Kaz,
  • Sarah Grace,
  • Lis,
  • Jilly,
  • Emma,
  • Nici,
  • Sam, Jones,
  • Vicky,
  • Kim,
  • Robyn, Deanna & Chelle,
  • Danny, Sam (methos) & Cerise.

Cyfaill cywir mewn ing y'i gwelir.

the translation is something like "a friend is known in adversity like gold is known in fire."

Ally and Heather: what can I say that won't sound mushy, goofy or that i've not already said/quoted/refered too before? Seriously? you guys are everything, litrally, figurativly, and everything in between

Ally “cormlle naa Tanya tel’raa” (your heart is that of a lion it should say)
you take so much crap and still manage to come back swinging, and you deal with my weirdness and quirks with grace

Heather - “Oio Naa Elealla alasse” (ever is thy sight a joy it should say) we have been through some madness this year ay lass? Faced wolves and Shadowhunters, dodged old ghosts and then some. 谢谢

Shorter than what I should say, seriously, call myself a writer, sometimes I wonder, its not much for people who mean so much

I know what to say and this I won’t translate - amin khiluva lle a’ gurtha ar’ thar

It still amazes me that you guys, ALL you guys put up with me, thank you, diolch I chi, tack, gracias, whakawhetai ki a koe, arigato, Xièxiè, thank you a thousand time

Conventions, Gigs, Signings,
there have been some greats this year,

Signings:
I’ve come face to face with two of my all time favourite authors in Ms Cassandra Clare and Ms Gail Carriger,

Well I’ve waxed lyrical about meeting ms Clare, even had a review on the British nephilim page. But wow o wow it was an honour both the first and second time, after kicking myself for missing her tour when it came through Yorkshire in 2013.
Far as I’ve noticed, shes so popular your not allowed to ask for a photo with her, but twice I’ve managed to catch heather getting her books signed (sadly Heathers lost the book she was getting signed here, public transport is a demon I swear)

Ms Carriger was everything I expected and more, and I am only sad that my friends missed her, I am however glad to say the next time she comes round my Parabatai and Alpha will both be joining me to make her acquaintance if it bloody kills me  (“ken that d’ya girls?”)

Conventions:
I finally got to tell Sylvester McCoy that he was my first doctor. Facing him again closer to home in Sheffield where he was sat holding court with his companions Sophie Aldred, at the same convention I made a cockney laugh when I told Burn Gorman of my one and only encounter with the infamous captain of Torchwood.

I Had a close encounter of the embarrassing “which part you from.” Kind with the awesome Daniel Sharman (turns out he was brought up o’er in Hull) he was beside his alpha Tyler Hoechlin, and Tok’ra turned hunter JR Bourne.

I found myself having to defend the honour (and ears) of a once wanna be werewolf (Colton Haynes) against Paul Blackthorne, only to have my defence confirmed by Stephen Lunsford who said the Wannabe wolf in question was perfect

This year I have reaffirmed the Morphing grids connection my verse when after missing chances with the originals I got to stutter my way through a conversation with Steve Cardenas,

along the way I’ve met Felicia Day, bugged Gareth twice about his silence over his part in the Bane Chronicles audio, been beside ally when she got Peter Davidson to sign a figure, goofed infront of Anthony Stewart head for Kaz, I didn partake but got offered tequila by Paul Amos, stood before Benedict Cumberbatch, and been sweated on by Natalia Tena.

Gigs:
On the grand scheme its been a quiet year for gigs, but those I’ve made have been awesome:
For the start of Heathers birthday week I goth my 4th time with William Control in the hause.
I went to see Patrick Wolf with Gareth, not my cuppa, but I love an excuse for a gig

The one I wanna talk about came after the madness of Wolfsbane II
In York, the centre of the Nephilim verse in the north of Yorkshire me and Heather saw The Darling Buds who were supporting the Xcerts on their whirlwind tour of the UK, far as I am aware it’s the first time they played York, and they were frelling amazing, everything you hope for in a band of insane lads, and then Jamie :D
I tweeted the first picture I could click on because I was so bloody tired out, and thought nothing more of the pic, though I did attempt to post a small number once I was awake enough to look them over properly
A few days after I was half aware that on twitter I kept getting notifications till I clicked one and it was my friend Lori, Dani and Heather pointing Jamie to my profile, didn’t understand why, I’m no poet :D but hwne I clicked on Jamie profile it turned out he’d somehow found the pic I’d posted and had decided it was his favourite pic of the tour, which could have killed me dead I kid you not.

The final gig of the year came the weekend before my 30th (like two weeks ago ish) me and Heather risked getting stuck in Leeds, to go to Manchester to see Molotov jukebox, we spent the day with Kim then wandered down towards where we’d see Emilie Autumn the year before, it was like we’d stepped into an episode of The Originals or Interview with The Vampire, Molotov Jukebox are New Orleans with London Accents, and it doesn’t hurt that their headed by Tonks herself Natalia Tena

2015 promises a lot more cons, and hopefully a lot more gigs, with the return to touring of Nightwish, there is hope!

Fandoms
First I have to doff my hat too two short lived shows
CW were going mad with the cutting sheers this year, and two awesome shows started and got cancelled without imo a real chance,  they were Starcrossed and The Tomorrow People: they had alien languages, actually prepared and not just thown together, superpowers with real explanations, so much potential, and awesome casts (and TTP had one of the  Amell boys to boot)

Speaking of Amell appeal Arrow ramped up this year, the first half of the year was all about Mirakuru and Deathstroke, and the last has been all about finding the killer of the canary, but for me its been about one guy Roy - now known by Arsenal, he’s really come into his own, from his (or rather his actors) days as a complete asshat in Teen Wolf to the sidekick of The Arrow :D

Arrow connects so many of my favourite shows: Torchwood, Doctor Who, Supernatural, Vampire Diaries and ofcourse Teen Wolf

An Arrow spin off started too - The Flash, which is a bit ify in places but has an awesome cast and is one I’m defiantly sticking with, Flash has another Teen Wolf connection in Barrys (The Flash) dad who is not only Isaacs abusive dad in Teen Wolf but was the original Flash in the… I think it was 70s

Gotham is another Ropey yet worth sticking to show that’s started (seems masks are in still) its pre pre pre Batman, so Bruce is still a kid and his parents have only just died so he’s under the watchful eye of Alfred - funfact about Alfred I didn’t learn till Halloween and got ridiculed for not knowing he (Sean Pertwee, whose name I also didn’t know till Halloween) is the son of 3rd incarnation Doctor Jon Pertwee - also known for Worzel Gummaidge the creepiest scarecrow pre Supernatural

speaking of
Doctor Who broke in its new incarnation this year, obviously I’ve not watched it, but he’s signed for 2 more seasons so I won’t be posting much from the Tardis next year.

Also:
  1. Defiance got the go ahead for a season 3 - I only watch for the Tarrs but the fact they get to continiue rocks.
  2. Lost Girl decided season 5 will be the final season.

*virtually lights a candle for Those not leaving 2014*

This year saw a lot of famous names and faces take their final bow on this side, and I'm sure someone somewhere will take ire with me only marking his passing, but I feel i can't review my 2014 without saying this

Ave Aqua Vale
Rik Mayall
Comic, Actor, Storyteller, Genius
March 1958-June 2014

He made the Grim tales for me, pretty much made my childhood from the British side of things. I used to want to be Young Ones Rik.
The most memorable statement about his passing comes from his long time onscreen partner in crime Ade Edmonson “and now he’s died for real without me. Selfish Bastard.”
If you as me Riks death wasn’t marked like it should have been and only now 6 months on have the BBC marked it, and he gave them some of his best work.

I intend to visit this bench and mark the first second I get
-
Also I have to mark the passing of my friends Heather and Ally long time Familliars when Caffreys an Bonnie decided it was time to cross over and join Harvey and Max

in closing
2014 is at an end and to be honest, if I’m 100% truthful, its not been  a half bad year, I’m still jobless, but my Life goes on, thanks in no small part to those around me, those that Hate me give me stronger fire to survive in spite of them and those that like me fill my sails to do so, and together it smells like Mangoes  quacks like a duck and trundles along quiet nicely
