January 2010

Andy perked up from his book as he heard Hayley's favorite song playing from her cell phone. She was napping on the couch, so he got up and checked the caller ID. Seth. He unlocked the touch screen with her password and answered it for her.

“Hey, Seth. What's up?” he asked with a glance at Hayley.

“Not much...about to head out and do some stuff over at Caroline's. You and Hayley should come. How is she, by the way?” Seth replied.

“She's great. The uh, pregnancy's making her take care of herself for the first time in forever. Hard to believe she's 22 weeks.”

“Awesome. Is she around? I have some news for her.”

“Uh...she's taking a nap, but I can get her for you,” Andy said.

“Okay.”

Andy went over to Hayley and gently shook her awake.

“Mmm?” she half-asked as she woke up.

“It's Seth. He has something to tell you,” Andy said softly. “Here.”

Hayley blinked her eyes, took the phone, and said, “Hello?”

“Hey. What's up?”

“Oh, sleeping. Being pregnant. The usual,” she laughed, voice deeper from sleep.

Seth didn't know what to say to that little remark, so he replied, “I've got some great news for you.”

“Really? What is it?”

“I just got off the phone with Lorne, and he says that you can come back when we start the new shows next week!”

Hayley immediately perked up. “That's awesome! Seth, you just made my day. Seriously! First tomorrow, now this!”

“Tomorrow?” he asked.

“Andy and I are going to find out what our baby is,” she said with a much more maternal tone.

“Oh...wait. I thought you said that it you weren't going to find out until the birth,” Seth said.

“Well, Andy got this sudden impatient streak in him and had to find out immediately,” Hayley said as she gave her husband a teasing wink.

“That doesn't surprise me, somehow,” Seth teased. “Okay, listen. I'm gonna head over to Caroline's. Good luck with your thing tomorrow.”

“Thanks...oh, and Seth? Be careful. It's hella messy outside.”

“I will. Bye.”

“Bye.”

Hayley hung up and let out a squeal of delight. As if in protest to the sudden loud noise, the baby kicked against her, causing her to place a hand on her rounder belly to try and soothe her child. Andy grinned as he watched this scene.

“Mama's sorry,” she cooed as she rubbed a gentle circle against her stomach. “There, better?”

“You're adorable,” Andy said as he sat next to her on the couch and put his hand next to hers. “Hey, you in there...”

The baby gave another little kick, and they grinned. Andy's lower voice was obviously getting through. They sat there quietly for a moment, and then he spoke up.

“What did Seth have to say that made you so happy?”

“It's awesome news. He said I can come back to work next week!” Hayley said delightedly.

“That is awesome! I bet you're excited.”

“Beyond excited,” she said. “I've missed it more than you can imagine.”

The Next Morning

Hayley awoke before Andy, so she carefully got out of bed and went to her closet. She wasn't quite big enough to wear maternity clothes, but her looser tops and pants fit perfectly. She looked down at her cutely rounder belly and grinned.

“We get to find out what you are today,” she whispered as she pulled an emerald-green top and some jeans out of her closet. She picked some cute brown flats to go with it.

“Hayley?” Andy said groggily. “What are you doing up?”

“For one, I'm pregnant...and for two, we get to find out what this little one is today. Remember?”

Andy was instantly wide awake and out of bed. Hayley giggled as he stumbled around their bedroom, trying to get his clothes on.

“Andy.”

“We've gotta go, Hayley! Why are you just standing there? Come on!” he said frantically.

“Andy...”

“We're probably late...overslept...damn it...”

“ANDY!”

“What?” he said.

“The appointment isn't for another two hours. And you're trying to put your jeans on over your pajama pants,” she said with a laugh.

“Oh...um...I meant to do that. Totally,” he replied, trying to sound cool.

“Right...you want me to cook something or go out to eat?”

“We've got that casserole you made yesterday...I mean, unless, you wanna go get something to eat.”

“Um, casserole sounds awesome. I'm gonna go get a shower, okay?” Hayley said as she gave her husband a quick good-morning kiss. “And relax.”

Hayley went into the bathroom and looked at her reflection. Her skin seemed to glow, which made her completely understand the whole “maternal glow” thing. She loved the new rosiness in her cheeks. She ran a hand through her messy hair and grinned. It was definitely thicker and shinier. The only downside was that she had to take care of the new, very fine hairs on her chin. Ugh. Now she knew how her mother felt. Hayley quickly undressed, got her shower going, and stepped in. The warm water coursed over her skin, refreshing her completely. Meanwhile, Andy got her breakfast ready. He put a thin wedge of casserole in the microwave and assembled a bowl of strawberries and pineapple. He put the bowl on the table, added the casserole when the microwave dinged, and finished with a small glass of apple juice instead of her usual cup of coffee. Hayley had taken the caffeine weaning somewhat well. Yes, she had been crankier during the intial stages, and she had often complained of headaches, but those were gone now and she was back to normal. Cheerier, even.

“For me?” she asked as she came into the kitchen, fully dressed with her hair still slightly damp.

“Of course. Sit.”

Hayley listened to Andy and began to eat her breakfast. She had to admit, he was amazing when it came to taking care of her. He insisted that she got enough rest, took over tasks when he felt she was doing too much, and always made sure that she ate properly. Back before her pregnancy, skipping a meal every so often to finish a sketch or start a new one was quite common for her. Now, with Andy around, that was impossible.

“Oh, my God. This pineapple is amazing, Andy,” she said as she chewed it slowly and savored the sweetness.

Andy grinned and joined her with his breakfast. They sat at their small table and talked, enjoying their breakfast together. Once they were done, Hayley washed the few dishes they had from breakfast while he got dressed. They grabbed their coats and left the apartment to go to the doctor's office. They sat in the modestly-decorated waiting room for a few minutes. Hayley idly flipped through a magazine while Andy made conversation with someone sitting next to him who seemed to be completely oblivious to who he was. He preferred it that way sometimes.

“Hayley Samberg?” a friendly nurse said as she clutched a clipboard. “Come on back.”

Andy and Hayley went back to the room with the ultrasound, and she sat on the bed while Andy took one of the chairs. She idly rubbed her belly and hummed a soft melody until the doctor came in.

“Hello, Hayley, Andy,” she said genially as she consulted her notes.

“Hello, Dr. Anderson,” Hayley said. “Today's the day...”

“Yes, it is. Now if you'd just lay back...there you go...”

Hayley pulled up her shirt and gasped a little when the doctor put the gel on her skin after firing up the ultrasound machine. No matter how many times she did that, it would always catch her by surprise. She ran the scanner over Hayley's stomach and focused intently on the 3D model on the screen. They had seen this before, but the parents-to-be were still in awe that the tiny baby on the screen was theirs. The person working the ultrasound moved it around until she could get a good enough view to identify the gender.

“Congratulations!” she said once she found the proper view. “Well...looks like one of you is going to get what you want!”

The doctor proceeded to give them the identifying characteristics after completing the ultrasound, and then she gave them a copy of the photos to keep for posterity. She finished with the rest of Hayley's check-up once the gel was cleaned off her skin. Both parents were delighted to find that she was progressing normally when it came to her size and other vital signs.

“If things keep going this well, it looks like you're going to have a healthy baby,” she said. “If you'll just come up front, we'll set up your appointment. You're due for the gestational diabetes test, aren't you?”

Hayley nodded as they followed the doctor up to the front desk to set up her next appointment. Hayley slipped the card into her purse and left the office holding Andy's hand.

“I can't believe it...wait, how are we going to tell people about the gender? I still kinda want it to be a surprise,” Hayley said once they were outside.

“Um...closest family and friends only. We can tell our parents, Jorm, Kiv, Jenn, and Liz. You can tell your brother. Nobody at work,” Andy explained.

“You know what this means, don't you?”

“I'm afraid to ask...”

“Jenn and I get to go shopping!” she said happily as she got her phone out and texted her best friend.

“Oh, man...” Andy sighed as they got into his car. He could already feel the dent in their checking account.

Two Days Later

“Hey!” Jennifer said once she opened the door. “You look so cute! Mind if I...?”

“Not at all,” Hayley said as she leaned to let her best friend touch her belly.

“The baby kicked!”

“It likes you,” Hayley laughed. “It should...I'm considering letting you and Jorm be godparents. I have to run it by Andy first, though.”

“Oh, Hayley. We'd be honored!”

“I knew it. Come on, there's a great sale at this shop I found.”

The two women made their way to Hayley's favorite shop and immediately went to the baby clothes. Hayley grinned. This was her chance to tell Jennifer what she was having...but she had to be creative. Jennifer began looking at cute little shorts and shirts, but Hayley stopped her.

“Um, not quite,” she said with a beam.

“Why not?”

“Jenn, we need to look for dresses, not sports outfits, as cute as they may be.”

Jennifer immediately put two and two together. “You're having a girl! Hayley! Congratulations! How's Andy taking it?”

“Beautifully. He's going to spoil her rotten,” Hayley said as she picked up a pale pink dress with lots of delicate frills.

“Oh, that's cute!”

“I thought so too. Come on.”

Hayley and Jennifer looked around the store and ended up with several dresses in many different colors as well as some more casual outfits for when they were going to be around the apartment or just enjoying a day in the city. They also got tiny shoes and some of those elastic headbands with a bow on them to match.

“You're going to have the best-dressed daughter at 30 Rock,” Jennifer said with a grin.

“The only daughter at 30 Rock, but still.”

As they left the shop to get some lunch, Andy told Jorm and Kiv.

“A girl?” Akiva asked. “I bet Hayley's delighted.”

“She is. She's out shopping with Jenn right now, actually,” replied Andy.

“Dude, I still can't believe it,” Jorma said. “You're gonna be a dad. I always thought Kiv would be the first one to have a kid.”

“Me too,” Andy answered. “I'm just...I have to tell myself every day that this is real and not some crazy dream.”

Jorma and Akiva grinned. The impending parenthood had definitely brought out Andy's softer, more sentimental side. They knew he was going to be a great dad, though. The newest Samberg was going to be a very lucky little lady.

“So...have you chosen a name yet?” Kiv asked.

“Yeah. We've had that chosen since before we knew she was pregnant, but we want to keep it a surprise. I'll say this...one of you is going to be pretty happy.”

His two friends exchanged glances. Andy was going to name his daughter after one of them. They gave him appreciative smiles to keep from using the word “sweet” to mean something other than “awesome.” It wasn't a very Dude-ly thing to say, after all. Andy jumped as he felt his phone vibrate in his pocket. He unlocked it and read the text from Hayley.

“Hayley's on her way home. I guess I'll see you dudes later,” Andy said as he stood.

“Congratulations on the daughter, Ardy,” Jorma said as they gave goodbye hugs.

“Thanks, Jorm.”

They finished their huggings, and Andy made his way back to his apartment. He arrived at about the same time as Hayley.

“Perfect timing,” she laughed.

“Always.”

They went inside, and Hayley showed him everything that she bought with Jennifer. Somehow, Andy forgot about the cost of all the clothes and accessories sinces they obviously made his wife so happy. She beamed at him when he didn't even mention them.

“You did great,” he said sweetly as she nuzzled into him and he held her close with his hands on her stomach.

“Thanks,” she murmured. “Now all that's left to do is wait for this little princess to get here.”
