Part 1
October 2009
Hayley Samberg sat in front of her computer screen and rubbed her eyes as she tried to make sense of the words on the screen. It was her sketch for Bill, Jason, and the host, but she couldn't understand anything she had written. It might as well have been written in Greek. She eyed the clock on her screen. 12:30. No wonder she was exhausted. She was pushing a 20-hour day at 30 Rock because it was the first day of rehearsals and things were coming down to the wire where writing and editing were concerned. She snapped to attention as she heard a soft knock on her door.
“Yeah?” she asked.
Seth Meyers opened the door and looked into Hayley's well-decorated office. She had pictures of her friends on her desk. His eyes immediately went to a picture from her wedding day. Andy and Hayley were in a loving embrace and looking into each others eyes. He had placed himself in that picture more times than he could count. Seth shook the idea out of his mind and looked around. Her diploma was on the wall, and she had several musical decorations as well. Books filled a small shelf near her desk, but they were rarely opened during the season. Seth saw Hayley, and she smiled weakly at him.
“Hayley, you look exhausted. Go home,” Seth said with concern in his voice and eyes.
“Can't...I've still got to fine-tune my other sk-sketch. I can sleep on a couple of chairs or the little couch.”
“You can finish that tomorrow. You need to get sleep now. Besides, I'm sure...Andy is worried about you,” he said with that little look of regret in his eyes.
“Okay. I'm...I'm gonna give him a call. Let him know I'm on my way. Bye, Seth.”
“Bye.”
Seth left and headed towards his apartment while Hayley called Andy. He picked up on the third ring, as always.
“Hey,” Andy yawned.
“Just...just thought I'd tell you that I'm on the way home. Well, not technically. I mean I'm still at 30 Rock.”
“Good. You sound exhausted. Do you want me to come get you?”
“No, I d-drove today. Remember?”
“Oh yeah. Be careful, okay?” Andy said. “I love you.”
“Love you too.”
Andy hung up and turned over to face Hayley's side of the bed. He touched the jade green fabric and smiled. It was warm even though she wasn't there. It even smelled like her. Andy loved Hayley more than he thought possible, and he couldn't imagine his life without her. He ran his finger over the golden wedding band and wondered how he could be so lucky. Hayley could've had her pick of any guy on the cast, probably in the city, but she picked him. He was so glad she did. Andy sighed happily and turned over to try and go back to sleep. Hayley would be fine.
Hayley somehow made her way to her car. The New York air was cool and crisp, but it didn't have any effect on her. She unlocked her car, got in, and ended up on the street. It was busy, but she was used to it. Living in New York for over ten years did that to her. She turned her CD player on and jumped when “Who Said We're Wack?” blasted from the speakers with thudding bass. Her heart pounded in her chest, and she turned the song down.
“Very funny, Andy!” she said as she grinned at his little joke. “Alright, let's do this. You'll be okay. You've done this so many times before.”
Hayley tucked a loose strand of her dark brown hair behind her ear and drove methodically. Left turn, right turn...stop. She knew this road like the back of her hand. No big deal. However, things began to change. Streetlights began to blur, and parked cars ran together as she drove down the road. Hayley yawned, and her eyes filled with tears, obscuring her vision that much more.
“Music. That'll help,” she said.
Hayley turned on her favorite station, and one of her favorite songs was playing. “Halo” by Beyonce. It reminded her of her relationship with Andy. She tried to sing along to keep herself awake, but that didn't work. She turned the air conditioner on full-blast even though it was nearly November and the nights were cool. Hayley should have known that wouldn't work because she always pestered Andy to turn the air down before they went to sleep. She slept better when it was cold. However, she wasn't exactly thinking very well in her exhaustion. Her eyelids felt impossibly heavy with the cold air as she took a bad turn through an intersection. Her hands instinctively gripped the wheel tighter, but her mind drifted away into another world as it succumbed to her exhaustion.
Tires squealed on the gray pavement and smoke filled the night air with the smell of burning rubber, but Hayley didn't notice any of these things. Her car swerved dangerously, went onto a different surface, and came to a screeching halt against something. As soon as her car made impact, her body flung itself forward against the steering wheel, but it was as if nothing happened to her. Hayley didn't feel the shattered glass fall around her and scratch her skin or hear the crunch of metal. She didn't feel the blood trickling down from her head, either. Sirens drew closer and wove themselves into her dream, but they didn't awaken her.
Two of the paramedics got Hayley out of the totaled car and ran tests on her vitals while another one checked her cell phone for emergency contacts. Of course, Andy was the first one listed.
“Andy Samberg and a wedding ring on her finger...holy shit, Greg. This is Hayley Samberg from SNL,” one of the paramedics said in a grotesque awe as he put two and two together.
“This is no time to be starstruck! Give his number to the hospital so they can call him!” Greg, a much more experienced paramedic said with authority in his gruff voice.
“Right...yes, we have a Mrs. Hayley Samberg here. She was in a car accident...unconscious with several lacerations to the head...possible internal bleeding and broken bones. Right, we're on the way. Her husband is the first person listed on her cell phone. His number is...”
The younger paramedic gave Andy's phone number to the receptionist at the emergency room and got off the walkie-talkie. He watched as his co-workers put the unconscious Hayley onto a bed and wheel it up into the back of the ambulance. It was such a shame to see people her age in this situation. That was the problem with America. People worked themselves to the bone and expected to be able to function normally. Of course, he had no idea what SNL's work schedule was like. He just really liked the show, and Hayley was one of his favorite cast members. Wait until the guys at his poker game heard this one. Hayley Samberg, nearly killed in a car crash, and he was in the ambulance that got her. They wouldn't believe it. He got into the ambulance and hung on as it sped towards the hospital. The ambulance rushed in and out of New York traffic until it pulled up at the emergency bay. Greg and another man wheeled Hayley out of the ambulance and into the emergency room and gave the doctors her details.
“Hayley Samberg, 31, car accident. Possible skull fracture, several lacerations to the face and extremities. Possible internal bleeding and broken bones.”
“Prep the OR!” the doctor called as they wheeled Hayley's bed into the elevator. “Stat!”
The receptionist nervously dialed Hayley's home phone number and waited for an answer. Andy jolted himself awake and picked up the phone on his nightstand.
“Hello?” Andy said as he held the phone tightly.
“Mr. Samberg, this is Bellevue Hospital. We have your wife here, and--” a soft, feminine voice said. How unusual.
Click. Andy hung up, jumped out of bed, and grabbed the first outfit he found. He dressed quickly, sloppily, in his dark bedroom, not caring if it matched. Hell, he didn't know if he had his shoes on the right feet or not. His mind raced as he tried to figure out what had happened to his wife. His Hayley. He ran to the parking lot, heart pounding in his chest. He fumbled with his keys as his nerves messed with everything. His hands shook with fear and adrenaline as he unlocked the door.
Hang in there, Hayley...I'm coming...damn it, I should've taken you home when I left!
Andy got in his car and backed out of the parking lot. He was on his way, but he couldn't get there fast enough.
