Patrick is fine. I've talked to him three times since 11:30am (all hail cell phones!). He's upset because he knows the girl involved, but says he wants to stick it out the rest of the day to see if he can find out anything else.
For those of you in larger cities who shrug and go "Oh, another school shooting...", you have to understand that these things DON'T HAPPEN in Midland. It's like the Amish shooting last year -- we just don't see this sort of gun violence in our safe, quiet little corporate town. It's pretty much why we all live here -- it certainly ain't for the hoppin' nightlife, glorious scenery or great weather.

03/07/2007 1:24 P.M. UPDATE:
A shooting was reported late this morning at H.H. Dow High School.
One person, a male from Coleman, shot himself in the head, police said. That dead male is the suspect in the shooting, which involved a handgun. He is not a student at the school. His body was observed by a Daily News reporter lying in a parking area near the school. The reporter also saw an ambulance leave the scene.
Jan Penney, director of emergency services at MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland, confirmed that Jessica Forsyth, 17, was brought to the hospital about 11 a.m. and is in serious condition.
Police had the area near the driveways that exit onto Main Street secured. No students were seen coming out of the school, but some were arriving via school buses or personal vehicles. Students are being allowed to leave the building.
The reporter heard the school had been placed on Code Red, the most severe warning situation. A school official was quoted as saying "it is safe" at the school at 11:30 a.m.
