I did hear that book fans aren't so happy, but as a non-book reader, I liked the season a lot. My main issue was Dany's lack of storyline. (Like, she spent three episodes saying "WHERE ARE MY DRAGONS". Surely there must have been more material for her.)
To be fair, Dany doesn't really have much of a plotty storyline in the book? The show actually added a lot to her story in an attempt to make it more exciting for TV, so those changes were kind of refreshing (except for a few that were really upsetting, but I don't want to spoil the books for you in case you plan on reading them).
As a TV viewer, it was a bit of an anti-climax. The Season 1 finale was all OMG Dany has dragons! And then she just kind of wanders around, visits a city, and loses them. Thrilling stuff. The Dany/Jorah scenes were the best part of her storyline for me.
I see how it was an anti-climatic, but the show did add more action, there was just really no material to spice things up. The second book is not Dany's book like first was. In the books it's a lot more walking and wandering aimlessly, so I think they did a lot with what they were given? Dany's arc is amazing in S1/book 1, but it kind of tapers off into something different I'm not sure a lot of people were anticipating given the OMG DRAGONS ending.
IA, I definitely appreciate that the show tried to make Dany's bits a little more exciting (though I will forever be bitter about how the House of the Undying turned out, like WHERE ARE MY PROPHESIES?!). I mean, it still didn't do much, but the effort is noted nonetheless lol
Tbh though, I feel as if most people seem to think that book 1 is Dany's best so IDK how the show-runners are going to fix that lol :/
I actually liked what they did with the House of the Undying? I mean, it took me a while to accept the changes, but it worked for the world the show is building. Like, tbh, they have been downplaying the magic and prophecies even more than the books do, so I think it might have looked odd? I STILL WANTED IT FOR THE VISUALS (and Elia Martell, I wanted to see mah bb), but I understand their choice? Also, it was probably easier on their budget since the blew it on Blackwater and ice zombies probably.
I feel like it's just such an exciting, quickly moving arc that's so GORGEOUS, that's it's hard to top? But I really love where she heads in the books and I'm in the minority on this, but I think it's interesting and makes sense? GRRM deconstructs EVERYTHING, so of course Dany would receive this big magical gift, then have to deal with realism and life and figure out how to be a leader before she can do anything important. I love watching her develop and mess up and make mistakes and learn.

lol yeah, that's honestly probably the main thing that's keeping me from complaining too much about how the House of the Undying turned out because, well, money doesn't grow on trees and the gorgeousness of 2x09 alone makes certain that it was well spent.
IA, I definitely think Dany EASILY had the best arc in the first book/season, but thank you for making me a bit more optimistic where she's concerned later in the story <333 Tbh I'm not too familiar with what happens to her after ACoK, most of what I know comes from what I pick up on forums and communities and there's a lot of pessimism in general there so yeah lol :/
Pretty much? I did not mind the changes after I thought about it and the visuals they did give me were SO STUNNING.
I mean, I feel like fandom has a lot of pessimism because they expected something different from her, while I think what is happening to her makes sense? Maybe because I have a different idea of Dany in my head, but idk, I still love her a lot.
yeah, it's mostly people who are familiar with the books that aren't as thrilled with this season as last from what I'm seeing.
Re Dany's storyline (or lack there of lol): opheliahyde's completely right with regards to Dany's arc in the second book--she literally does NOTHING but wander, and they actually beefed it up a bit on the show with the dragon stealing business, BUT it still didn't help tbh because I have to concur that her spending 3 episodes going on about her lost dragons (uggh and then there was that completely unnecessary scene in episode 2x08 where all she did was remind Jorah and the viewers that she needs to go to the House of the Undying to get back her dragons which, WE KNOW LOL), then getting them back in the almost completely anti-climactic way that she did (the House of the Undying was one of the most epic sequences in the book, I don't want to spoil you in case you ever read, but let's just say that book fans are RAGING at how it turned out and I can't really blame them
