IT’S BACK, IT’S BACK, IT’S BACK!! *squeals* *__* though I had to watch it a day later than I usually would, THANK YOU VERY MUCH WORK D=
Overall, a solid episode and a great set-up for what I hope will be a potentially awesome season, HOWEVER, if we’re going to compare I certainly didn’t feel that it packed the same “OMG THIS SHOW JUST PUNCHED ME IN THE GUT AND I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT AND I HATE WHAT IT DOES TO MEEEE” factor that “The Return” did (whichstill stands as one of my favorite episode of any TV show ever). That’s not to say that I dislike it or anything, I did like it (quite a bit), it’s just that the part of me that can’t help but draw comparisons wasn’t as impressed with this opener was it was with the last *-)
+ I did LOVE the ensemble feel this episode had, everyone was interacting with everyone and for the first time in a long time (possibly since 2x06-2x07) I actually got the impression that many of these people have spent their entire life together. Particularly loved the “girl talk” scene with Elena, Caroline, and Tyler (and Tyler being all privy to things he’s NOT ALLOWED TO KNOW, JEEZ).
(credit) + On that note, I absolutely positively, ADORED every single one of Caroline’s scenes this episode. I mean, I love the girl to bits as is, but here we got so many different sides of her, and despite how contradictory some of them may be (party planner one second, drinking out of a blood-bag the next) they blend so seamlessly. And, have I ever mentioned how much I LOVE bitchy!Caroline (“great party!” “Thanks. Now leave it.” FOREVER LOL’ing)
(credit) + Caroline/Tyler this episode = EVERYTHING I HAVE EVER WANTED FROM THAT SHIP *__* Ngl, when I first saw the promo, I was worried that the writers might rush things between them given their knowledge of how popular a ship it is (but then of course I scolded myself for not giving them more credit because, after all, they are well aware of how popular Damon/Elena is and they aren’t rushing things on that front), but thankfully my fears were in vain. Everything about them felt organic to me. Granted, we didn’t see them spend every moment of the summer together, but given where things left off with them at the end of last season, I don’t find it hard to believe that they were indeed as close as we’re led to believe they were (and are).
Also, the way they deal with one another (the way Tyler responded to Caroline’s jealousy at the party particularly comes to mind here) suggests a very fundamental mutual understanding of one another-and just, they’re comfortable.
And the sex was just UNF. That is all lol *fans self*
+ I really felt for Elena this episode, from the moment she opened her eyes it was just-sad. Everything about her was just plain sad and tragic and empty even. In my head canon, wanting to find Stefan and bring him back no matter what has as much to do with her loving him as it does with her inability to accept that she had lost YET ANOTHER person of great significance in her life. AND HER LITTLE FACE WHEN ALARIC LEFT AT THE END =’( (that said, I am loving what an utter mess Alaric has become in light of Jenna’s death and his own sense of inadequacy). I wanted an Elena whose losses and experiences have taken a heavy toll on her in season 3 and, if this premiere is anything to go by, it looks like I’ll be getting just that *squeals*
(credit) + Ngl, I was just about ready to FLIP MY SHIT when I saw Andie and Damon in a very obviously post-coital state because WHAT THE HELL SHOW?! Still wasn’t happy with them reintroducing her just to turn her into another means to an end, particularly when no clear resolution was given to the whole compulsion thing from last season-in fact, that entire scenario’s only saving grace was that they ventured to make it clear that she wasn’t being compelled (when she refused to get Damon another bottle-AS SHE SHOULD-and when she wasn’t down for a road trip), which suggests that Damon has made a major progression with regards to the way he views people and their purpose (i.e. he’s learning from his mistakes).
+ I really liked all the Damon/Elena bits this episode, they had a very comfortable, late season 1 vibe going-and they still had that moment of ~tension when she turned towards him after he put on the necklace for her (which I thought was a very sweet gesture on his part btw, gifting it to her). Even that “towel” scene wasn’t as bad as I was afraid it would be so yay =D
(credit)+ Love the toll the whole “seeing dead people” thing is taking on Jeremy-in fact the return of stoner!Jeremy actually got a squeal out of me because I kinda hated how all his issues seemed to have inexplicably evaporated as of early season 2 and one of the things that made him one of my favorites in season 1 were his issues. Also, really digging the bromance him and Matt have going, it’s inevitable given that they’re co-workers and they play off of one another nicely.
However, I wasn’t a fan of how Matt was written overall this episode, particularly with regards to his treatment of Caroline. I mean I understand that his loneliness and the generally shitty state of his life may make him prone to lashing out here and there, but HE BROKE UP WITH HER because he couldn’t deal with what she’s become, and now he’s penalizing her for potentially moving on?? Idk, idk it just doesn’t seem fitting for the guy who extended his hand to Stefan in 1x02 and apologized for behavior that was pre-dominantly some else’s (Tyler). I always saw Matt as someone who can sometimes be inconsiderate and/or petty (in terms of his jealousy), but not downright “douchey” =/
(credit)+ YOU LIE o_O LOL loved the Stefan Klaus bits, my favorite (BECAUSE I AM A COMPLETE PSYCHO DIDN’T YOU KNOW??) had to be the way Stefan tried to put the bodies back together after he tore them apart, a VERY disturbing, and I’d even venture to day brilliant, touch. And the Stefan/Elena call at the end was very touching, I didn’t expect her to say what she said and it was all so poignant and tragic and why does this show do this to me?! Lol =(
&& now I’m off to catch up on everyone’s thoughts on the episode!! =)
