all i want is to be your harbor
An I-8 and U-1224 FST
By scribblefish
for heavensealed
You might recognize her from this comm; she has posted here a few times and translated some helpful info.
And guess what? It's her birthday today! 21 years old!
Because she recently got me into this fandom, I wanted to give her a small gift featuring one of her favorite pairings [and mine too]!

It was harder making this playlist then I thought it would be, and it ended up as sort of a musical story.
So please excuse the sappiness, shipping, and angst!
I hope you all enjoy it, especially you, heavensealed !!!

I Think I'm Turning Japanese
by Kirsten Dunst
U-1224
[U-1224 arrives to Japan. He's a little overwhelmed but fascinated with the culture around him as his new friend and comrade I-8 drags him around the base, out into the city... Although he does miss parts of his German "lifestyle" very much.]

No sex, no drugs, no wine, no women
No fun, no sin, no you, no wonder it's dark
Everyone around me is a total stranger
Everyone avoids me like a cyclone ranger
That's why I'm turning Japanese
I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so
Turning Japanese
I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so

Love Story Meets Viva la Vide
by Jon Schimidt
I-8 and U-1224
[Slowly, the war goes on. But in their small pocket of space U-1224 and I-8 build a strong, if a bit odd, friendship between training and important meetings. I-8 finds in U-1224 a companion who doesn't think of him as a problem child and who listens to him passionately. In I-8 U-1224 finds someone so vastly different from his fellow German transports and who gladly, if a bit pompously, answers all his questions.]

Harbor
By Vienna Teng
I-8 <--> U-1224
[The strange friendship wraps around itself, forming a tight knot. U-1224 finds a growing dedication to I-8 as he continues to be a part of Japanese naval training. Sometimes he finds himself pressing his hand over his chest, pushing hard as he watches I-8 continue on his rants and wide fanged grins. It aches when he realizes what he's responsible for, and how much he wants to do right to I-8, not just to his duty. I-8, meanwhile, looks at U-1224's innocent face, and has to remind himself that this U-Boat in front of him won't be staying on Japanese shores forever. The waters away from him are dangerous, and I-8 bites his lip as he hopes but never asks U-1224 to return home safe.]

We're here where the daylight begins
The fog on the streetlight slowly thins
Water on water's the way
The safety of shoreline fading away

Sail your sea
Meet your storm
All I want is to be your harbor
The light in me
Will guide you home
All I want is to be your harbor

Fear is the brightest of signs
The shape of the boundary you leave behind
So sing all your questions to sleep
The answers are out there in the drowning deep

Sail your sea
Meet your storm
All I want is to be your harbor
The light in me
Will guide you home
All I want is to be your harbor

You've got a journey to make
There's your horizon to chase
So go far beyond where we stand
No matter the distance
I'm holding your hand

Sail your sea
Meet your storm
All I want is to be your harbor
The light in me
Will guide you home
All I want is to be your harbor (x2)

Das Beste
by Silbermond
U-1224--->I-8
[U-1224 wishes he could be as proficient with expressing himself about how I-8 makes him feel in Japanese as he can in German. The only thing he can do instead is smile, taking I-8's hands in his own and promising to practice. Until then, he thinks of the words in his native tongue, laughing at I-8's peeved expression when the harsh language confuses him.]

Got drunk with energy, you take the doubts away from my eyes
Tell me a thousand lies, I would believe them all
There's just one single doubt that stay, the doubt that I deserve someone like you
......
When my life gets all messed up, you will be the one that keeps me calm
Because everything that you give to me, just feels so incredibly good
When I'm not willing to rest, you're the journey without an end
That's why I lay my small big world into your guarding hands

Sakura Sake

I-8-->U-1224
[He'd never seen someone get so excited over a festival. I-8 imagined this is what a parent felt like as he trails behind his taller German friend, watching as U-1224 flits between the stalls, eyes wide and at least three different kinds of Japanese treats in his hands. It was always like this, when they travel, when they're eating sushi, when he helped the other sub put on a yukata properly... it was as if it was the most enthralling thing the silver haired man had ever seen. I-8 chuckles to himself, before elbowing next to U-1224, insisting he play the goldfish catching game for him, since he's the master at it. After all, he doesn't want to deal with that kicked puppy look on U-1224's face when he loses. Doesn't want to see that look.]

Someone is singing that song you like
In front of the station

Even if we are separated far away,
You won't ever disappear

So we didn't say farewell

One day, I want us to meet

At the place we desired

The blooming cherry blossoms

So that they are not crushed,

the small buds sway within your heart

They sing now so that you're not discouraged

Your Hand in Mine
by Explosions in the Sky
I-8<-->U-1224
[It's not like anything's changed. There wasn't a cliche fall or a series of notes or baked goods. But there's elbowed sides and heads bent close in secret snickers and snarky teasing that they only accept from one another. Their friendship is almost intimidating if it wasn't so obviously necessary for each individual involved.]

Stalker
by The Pillows
I-8-->U-1224
[U-1224 and Bismarck are talking, the older man unflinching at the serious face the young submarine sports. I-8 glances at the other men in the meeting as subtly as possible, wondering why he feels so intimidated with those suddenly extremely sharp eyes and thinly pursed lips. It feels like an expression he should know, since he and U-1224 are a little on the rough side in regards of their friendship--normal friends don't show off "S" tying up techniques. But it's now he sees the frightening, menace side to U-1224 in his pressed uniform and impressive medals, the Iron Cross around his neck catching the low yellow light. I-8 swallows, glaring at U-1224's collarbone, where he knows the other's name is tattooed, and tries not to feel anything else besides pissed off as he listens to U-1224's mission. He's leaving.]

Goodbye My Lover
by James Blunt
U-1224-->I-8
[U-1224 prepares to leave, stepping inside the shell of the ship he embodies, sighing as it feels like slipping into one's own bed after months of relentless travel. And at the same time, as the submarine begins to dive, feeling the water slip around him, lifting his hair and caressing his closed eyes--tickling his eyelashes....he finds a crushed origami star in his pocket.]

You touched my heart you touched my soul.
You changed my life and all my goals.
And love is blind and that I knew when,
My heart was blinded by you.

Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.

Hallelujah
by Jeff Buckley
U-1224
["The Destroyer Escort USS Francis M. Robinson reported a submerged contact at 1900 hours on May 13, 1944. The destroyer engaged the contact with a 24-mortar spread from its hedgehog mount, and then dropped a string of eight depth charges. Shortly after the munitions detonated, a series of 4 underwater explosions were detected."

"...I-8?" The wondering call was unanswered by the Atlantic around him. "...I-8...'I are dead'" The whisper was followed by a terrible laugh that melted into a painful sob, scattering bubbles. U-1224 wondered if he should fear the dark sea around him as he sank, then decided not to over think the inevitable. The documents and weeks and weeks of letters and practice hiragana floating and smearing in the blood trailing behind him. The men who manned him, I-8's countrymen dead within his walls.
"'m sorry...Sa...yo...na..ra..."]

Well, maybe there's a god above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you...
It's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah...
Hallelujah...

Kings And Queens
by 30 Seconds to Mars
I-8-->U-1224
[The meeting is already underway and U-1224 still hasn't arrived with those documents. I-8 scoffs to himself, standing as the commander walks in, imagining the German's crippling embarrassment at such disrespect. Imagining seeing the flustered, miserable look on the other sub's face makes him chuckle a little, and he has to stifle it as the meeting begins. The commander sighs, Bismarck stiffens next to I-8, who throws his paling face a confused glower, but then he freezes as well.
"'RO-501,' U-1224, was sunk three days ago at 18°7'59"N, 33°12'59"W."
"...What? What do you mean he 'sunk'?!" I-8 slammed his hands on the table, standing up. There's a murmur amongst the other officers, but Bismarck just flinches. I-8 slowly starts hyperventilating, screaming about U-1224's 'fucking stupidity' until he has to leave the room, springing as fast as he can down the halls, towards the harbor where U-1224 was due to dock. They were wrong. It was a misscommunication, they were wrong. He would be there, frazzled and dropping some top secret documents as he tried to look clean cut at the same time he was hurrying to that damn meeting where they thought it'd be funny to say he was sunkdeaddeaddeadgonegonegone...]

The age of man is over
A darkness comes and all
These lessons that we learned here
Have only just begun

We were the Kings and Queens of promise
We were the victims of ourselves
Maybe the Children of a lesser God
Between Heaven and Hell
Heaven and Hell

My Body Is A Cage
by Sara Lov
I-8
[Being a week late isn't that unheard of. Not in war. Something must have come up to deter him from returning home, he might have run into...
I-8 decided not to linger at the window that looked over the harbor this time. He knew exactly what U-1224 had run into. His knees wobbled as he walked, wondering if it should hurt more then it did. It just meant he wouldn't get asked random translations or get stared at by imploring shocking blue eyes that looked way too much like the sea they both loved as he was answering a question or be surprised as the other showed powerful strength and viciousness, or feel intimidated and powerful at the same time, to notice the other's heat as they sat next to one another over a list of orders or plans and... and...
oh... Oh...
Now it hurt. Realizations like that shouldn't hurt that bad.]

My body is a cage
That keeps me from dancing with the one I love
But my mind holds the key

Standing next to me
My mind holds the key
I'm living in an age
That calls darkness light
Though my language is dead
Still the shapes fill my head

I'm living in a age
Who's name I don't know
Though the fear keeps me moving
Still my heart beats so slow

Another Word for Desperate
by Straylight Run
I-8
["...You weren't the only one who lost him, you know." Bismarck said softly, with no feeling. Or was that the way U-1224 used to talk and he'd just gotten used to it?
"But I was the one who had him the most." I-8 hissed back, going back to sharpening his katana vigorously. He didn't care how much that stung the German. U-1224 had been his and he had been too stupid to realize it.]

Then he asked me,
What does that mean?
What's another word for desperate?
Repetition makes an impression,
So what's another word for desperate?
I won't be around here for too very long,
I won't be around here for too very long!

Bullet With Butterfly Wings
by Smashing Pumpkins
I-8

The world is a vampire, sent to drain
Secret destroyers, hold you up to the flames
And what do I get, for my pain?
Betrayed desires, and a piece of the game
Even though I know -- I suppose I'll show
All my cool and cold-like old job

[ "It's you guys, isn't it?! The one who killed my friend!
Say it! Say where your allies are! Everything!
Don't lie! I will never forgive you!
He was my friend! Only if you guys weren't around!
I'll slice off every head and kill every single one of you!
DIE! DIE! DIE! He probably died suffering more than you!
So you guys should die suffering as well!"*]

____

Gravity
by Sakamoto Maaya
[His grip on his sword is suddenly way too hard to maintain. I-8 grunts, muttering how it's not worth the effort, and lets it go, knowing it's making a bath for his body as it sinks. The wounds make him gag blood into the bitter sea around him, but he realizes that if he doesn't move, it's not so bad, watching the light under the water as it parts and bobs in odd circles on the surface ever further away. I-8 hums, relaxes, smiling wryly to himself..then there's a soft brush on his other hand. Lazily, he only gives the energy to move his eyes over, gazing into the murk for whatever creature or ship part he'd run into on his slow sink. It's an Iron Cross, glinting in the underwater light. He gasps, twisting viciously and snagging it with both hands, ignoring the pain as he clutches the metal until it cuts his palms. The ocean is silent, claustrophobic around him... and then he gasps, sobs, lips trembling as he presses the old, salt worn cross to them, not trying to figure logic, just glad there's something near his small island at a depth he can finally reach.]

Am I alone? Is somebody there,
beyond these heavy aching feet?
Still the road keeps on telling me to go on.

Something is pulling me.
I feel the gravity, of it all.

The Wings
by Gustavo Santaolalla
I-8/U-1224
[The water didn't feel so cold anymore. I-8 clutches the Iron Cross to his chest, keeping his eyes closed as he drifted, humming in dull observation as he felt the sun's caress through the water once again.
'Have I gone to submarine heaven?' the Japanese sub thought sarcastically.
Then, he felt a pair of solid, warm, familiar arms wrap around his stomach, and a forehead press against his shoulder blades. And following it were adorable, heartbreaking words, always with that heavily German accent.
"...O-Okairi."]

I'm On A Boat

[I-8 and U-1224 are badasses.]

I'm on a boat and
It's going fast and
I got a nautical themed
pashmina afghan
I'm the king of the world
On a boat like Leo
If you're on the shore,
then you're sure not me-oh
