I love this for its unconventionality, the feeling that their friendship is so deep and important to them both, but not about sex.
My favorite line is this: John had never talked much, and didn't now, so Rodney did.
Not sure why, but it hits me just right.
And love the pizza bit, too, because John showing up the next morning with a cold box of pizza is perfect. :)

The slash that isn't!
That's the perfect label for this story.
And John and the cold pizza ... yeah. In my mind, he went to get pizza, wheedled a small plane out of Carter and flew down to Nellis, took a car from there, just to get to Rodney asap. Because he missed him like hell, too, was just his usual emotionally retarded self and couldn't take the first step without Rodney's call.

That, there, exactly. I am SO glad this ame across. Neither of them would have tried it again of they hadn't both thought the respective other wanted it. They'd have shrugged and moved on, with some awkward shuffling, but the interruption and the fact that neither knew wat the other thought, and only assumed, was their undoing.
(But, ow, if the last bit reads as an outside POV, then I need to do some corections.)

Exactly.
It does work, in so many stories, but in so many others, I found myself thinking that it would have worked far better if there hadn't been any sex. Chemistry isn't a one-way street. And it comes in many shapes and forms. Time to try something new, I'd say.
