Author's Notes: I've had a bit of writer's block lately, not to mention college is kicking my ass. I've been toying around with ideas for a while, and wanted to do a fluff/romantic piece with no smut involved. I wanted there to be tension between the two and have them both wrestling with the idea that they could be attracted and perhaps be in love with the other. I don't know if the latter came across or not. Also, I wanted to write one with primarily dialog, since I noticed in a lot of my scenes a use a ton of description and narration but not a whole lot of dialog. The scene didn't end quite how I originally imagined; once again, the characters took control of the scene; I simply wrote them in it. I like to think of it maybe as a re-imagining of the balcony scene during Chibi-Usa's birthday celebration ball which the ever fabulous usagivindaloo wrote for me. This scene feels a little clumsily written; I may go back rework and expand this scene later.

Hotaru couldn’t help but let out a dreamy sigh as she walked out onto the balcony and saw the how the brightly the stars sparkled in the darkness of the night. She knew hidden deep down within her was the soul of a hopeless romantic. She’d never really acknowledged much less indulged it. Yet here she was thinking how nice it would be to have someone to hold and dance with her underneath the stars, away from the crowd, to the soft tunes of a waltz that floated out from the ballroom; Hotaru reasoned it was a bad case of “Cinderella-Syndrome” that she supposed hit every young woman at least once in her lifetime. Still, it was nice to be able dream, an opportunity she’d never had until the creation of Crystal Tokyo and the utopic reign of Neo-Queen Serenity.

“Balconies always have the tendency to make things more romantic,” she thought a loud.

“Unless you happen to be falling off one,” said a deep voice. The sharp comment came from Sephiroth who had quietly come up from behind to stand next her.

Hotaru frowned, but only for a moment. She was certainly not going to let going to let him, this aloof and cynical general, ruin her daydream.

“Then there’s someone to catch you at the bottom,” she countered.

“Thinking of jumping?” he asked snidely.

“No, I was thinking of how funny it would be to stand aside and let you fall flat on your face.”

“That would certainly put a tragic end to your romance.”

“I prefer to think of it as a comedic twist.”

Sephiroth failed to think of a quick and clever response; instead, he chose to be silent. An awkward moment followed in which neither he nor Hotaru could think of anything to say.

“Well, try not to fall,” Sephiroth said as he turned to re-enter the ballroom where the festivities were in full swing. He didn’t enjoy going to these social gatherings and usually kept a fifty-foot difference from people. However, returning to the mass, at this moment, afforded him an escape, though he wasn’t sure if it was to save face or keep him from staring intently at Hotaru.

Hotaru pretended to continue to look out at the stars, all the while trying to steer her gaze away from Sephiroth’s vanishing form. He was arrogant and had completely succeeded in ruining the mood she had been in. Still, she felt a twinge of regret as he left.

The balcony seemed empty and cold now; all the romance had dissipated into thin air. Frustrated, Hotaru left; she wondered if Sephiroth hadn’t ruined her mood after all but rather improved it by his presence.
