Well, if nothing else is any good about this town, at least I've discovered one decent Calgary band.
Former co-worker, friend, mentor and ex-Calgarian Big Robbie 'Guitar' Kurcz recommended that I investigate the
Ship & Anchor pub, one of his old haunts. Funny name for a pub nowhere near any significant body of water. 'Course, I can't just walk into a pub and drink alone, and I'm not great at meeting strangers, so I needed an excuse. Thursday night, one came my way.
I was looking for open mic nights, actually, and stumbled upon a listing of live music. Scrolling down, I found a name that sounded interesting:
The Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir. Playing at the Ship & Anchor, nonetheless! I could go and watch the band and investigate the pub without seeming like a lone alkie! Perfect.
I got on the C-train (strange subway/streetcar hybrid, travels above ground) and walked the remaining few blocks. The pub was comfortable (sort of a Mansion House vibe in a newer building), but the highlight of the evening was definitely the band.
Old-timey folky bluesy badass bluegrass. Sort of like a punk-rock Tom Waits meets a zombie Howlin' Wolf.
Their Myspace: songs are here. Listen. It'll do you good. Bandmates
canrocker and
guccilittlehoo, you two in particular.
(For those who do listen:
here's the Wikipedia page on the legend of St Hubert. This explains not only the cross between the antlers of the deer on the Jagermeister logo, but is also the reason why the Kitchener German hunting/fishing club is named 'Hubertus Haus'. It does not, however, explain the
Quebecois chicken restaurant chain.)
