Amare
Marlene
Backlogged to Wednesday morning. Marlene goes to the sanctuary to visit Amare to see how she's doing.
Amare wasn't expecting company at all today. She didn't even know that Marlene was in Prontera, she was that out of it.
When Marlene went to the Sanctuary, she was told that Amare was in her room. Being that it wasn't that long since the two had seen each other, getting to her room shouldn't be too hard.
That's okay, Marlene being in Prontera was a little rare in and of itself, y'know?
After being told of her friend's whereabouts, Marlene headed there. She did indeed remember the way to Amare's room, and managed to find it again without incident. She knocked, hoping Amare was feeling up to conversation. And not going crazy, please.
"Its open."
She didn't have a slightest clue who it was. She was looking at the cover of the bible and the cover of her magijournal. Considering she was grieving, she still kept excellent care of herself, she just wasn't talking to anyone. That's cool, its normal when you're downright depressed over someone dying. Right? Right?
Right. Hey, Amare was already doing a better job of grieving than Marlene had, that was worth something! No clawing maids' faces off for you, Amare!
She pushed the door open, glancing in to spot the priestess before entering and shutting it behind her. "Hello, Amare," she said by way of greeting. "I thought I'd stop by to see you while I was in town."
What no. She did bible to the faces, but no clawing them off! Then again the only one that got bibles to the face was Metro. But that's another log.
She turned around in her seat to faintly smile at Marlene. "It was very nice of you, Marlene." Yay, someone she could totally relate to.
It was good to see a smile, however faint. Marlene returned it with her own, and walked over to stand beside Amare, leaning against the edge of the desk she was sitting at. "How are you?" she asked.
A sigh escaped from her. She lost count how many times she heard that question. Same answer too. "I've been coping." Oh noes, her eyes were starting to well up. She rubbed her eyes with her sleeve and she lowered her arm. "Albeit not very well."
The smile fell into concern. "I understand," she said softly, and Amare had the privilege of knowing that she meant it and really did. She reached over, drawing the priestess to her for a hug. Everything that people usually said here, "I'm sorry" or "It'll be okay," none of that really helped. Marlene knew that. So she didn't say it.
However! Marlene was the first one to offer a hug. Amare grabbed onto her and she started sobbing and crying into her stomach. She felt comfortable crying in front of Marlene, even more comfortable than around her fellow priests that she grew up with.
The hug meant so much to her, Marlene would probably know how much it would mean to anyone who lost someone dear.
She'd expected her to cry; she just continued to hold her, one hand moving to start softly stroking her hair. There was nothing to say that Amare needed to hear. It was better for her just to cry and get it out.
"Its not fair! Just when we were going to make plans for engagement, marriage, and having a family, he dies! Doesn't the Lord support marriage? Why did he take my chance away from me?" It was almost like Amare was losing faith in the one thing she helped people believe in, Odin.
Ohhh yeah Amare was a priestess. Huh. That whole athiest thing kinda didn't help Marlene much with all that...God stuff. "I don't know," she answered honestly.
After a few minutes of crying she collected herself together, grabbing a tissue from her desk and wiping her eyes. It felt good to get that out of her system. She looked up to Marlene and she smiled, just a tiiiiiny bit. She didn't know what it was about her, but she was glad that Marlene was there.
"I've talked to a few of the priests here. One in Morroc said that I could stop by and help her with the orphanage. They all understand that I want to get away from Prontera. My charge is coming with me, I believe."
It was probably that whole thing where Marlene actually kind of understood what she was going through. That tends to be comforting.
"Sister Eliza?" she asked. She recalled Amare mentioning the name, and it was also the name of that priestess Arun had gone to visit while he was in Morroc. Had to be the same person. "I think that's a good idea. Getting out, getting away from here."
She nodded a bit. "Yeah, that's her name. Sister Eliza." She thought that getting out of Prontera was a pretty damn good idea too. Only she had to pass by the shop that James ran. Oh no, she thought of him again. The eyes started to well again, but no sobbing.
"I'm not even going to bother how you know her name, it's your business. I have to start packing to go soon. I might not stay in Morroc, I might just travel around Rune-Midgard for a while, dumping Sam off at the orphanage. I heard that constant travel does a soul in mourning good."
"Arun knows her," she said, volunteering the information anyway.
Travel? Well. Maybe for Amare. "If you think it will help, then I think you should. Did you talk to Sam about it?"
"Sam knows about Morroc, we've brought it up before in the past." She tipped back into the chair a bit. "The entire Sanctuary knows I want out of Prontera, so I'm going with Sam. I swear, that girl keeps me on edge."
"Hm? Why's that?" Sam had seemed nice enough when she'd met her before. Not very talkative, a little distant, but nice enough. Marlene was also making an attempt to steer the conversation away from James and the reason Amare was traveling.
"Well a lot of people think the girl is a bully. That couldn't have been farther from the truth. Just a bunch of children in the orphanage stirring up trouble. She really is a good girl. She studies hard, she does her assignments on time, she's devoted to her faith." It seemed to be working! Go Marlene, go! Distract her from her tragedies.
A bully? Wow. Quiet and reserved, but the girl definitely hadn't seemed like a bully when Marlene had met her. "That's surprising. Why do they think that?"
"She's quick to defend her friends and from what I've heard, Sam's got a mean punch. Sam never starts fights, as an acolyte she shouldn't." She had a lot of fun teaching Sam, but she would never admit that, she had her own sense of pride, and she had to give off the strict teacher act just for kicks. "Just some jerks that want to cause trouble."
"Oh, my." A mean punch, eh? She was definitely not the fragile looking sort, but a fighter? That was a bit of a surprise. "If she doesn't start fights, I suspect she must be good at finishing them." In order to earn a reputation as a bully? Yeah, had to be.
Amare nodded. "Usually without a scratch. She doesn't get in trouble for them either. Good for me as well, I don't get scolded for not keeping a watchful eye on my student."
The diversion tactic seemed to be working beautifully. Talking about Sam was a lot better than Amare crying, for sure. "Sounds like she's smart about it. I suppose that speaks of maturity."
Yes, the tactic was working nicely. Amare went on to talk about how she liked teaching children, and how being at the orphanage might widen her perspective about raising children of her own.
"I might even adopt one from the orphanage when I'm ready." She paused a bit. "And whenever I have my own, it might be nice for the kid to have a brother or sister."
Marlene listened to Amare with a smile, glad that she wasn't trying to dwell on James. "I think that would be a wonderful idea, Amare. There are too many orphans who never get into caring families." She'd been lucky to have an aunt who was so willing to take her. She couldn't imagine having to grow up in an orphanage from the age of six. "That's probably what I'll do. Adopt." ...If Arun ever warmed up to the idea of raising children.
She smiled and nodded once in agreement. "It's a shame, most of those orphans go into the wrong style of life when they're not adopted. Children are a Godsend. I'm set to leave for Morroc on the 20th, I just have to let Sister Eliza know when I'm arriving."
"Let me know how it goes," she said. Eliza, hm? Amare knew her, Arun knew her, why did Marlene not know her? She had a journal, didn't she? She'd have to fix that, then. "And, ah, when you see her, tell her Arun's girlfriend says hello."
She laughed a bit. It seemed that everyone knew Sister Eliza but Marlene herself. Perhaps that could be fixed someday. Too bad Marlene's mun is really mean. :|
"Of course, I'll tell her."
WHAT :( SHE'S MAKING A POST RIGHT NOW DAMN IT.
"Thank you." Pause. Lull in the conversation. She glanced away, trying to decide what to say. She didn't quite want to leave yet, talking to Amare was pleasant, there was a reason they were still friends after all the crazy that had gone down. She couldn't find anything to bring up that she knew wouldn't trigger Amare to think of James.
She thought of something! "How's your birthday been, Marlene? I thought of treating you to dinner, if you already weren't."
"Ah?" The suddenness of it caught her off-guard. "Oh, my birthday was wonderful," she answered, smiling. "Thank you for asking."
As for dinner. Well, she still had to go visit Zero tonight, too, but it was just about time for lunch, wasn't it? "Perhaps lunch is a better idea?" she suggested.
She smiled and she laughed a bit. "Okay then, lunch it is. It gives me a chance to find you a nice present." And hopefully she'd have that present before Marlene went back to Juno.
