Just finished a 3,000 word essay on the evolution of Australian screen comedy. YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW.
So, I haven't posted recently. I've been sick and school has been busy. I had, no joke, the weirdest illness ever. My throat glands were swollen, which caused my stomach glands to swell too, thus causing the worst run-off period pain I have ever experienced in my life. On top of the nastiest cold ever. I have had this cough for over a week now, and it is literally just a bark, I mean, it sounds like I am barking. But winter is in full swing here, so I'm hoping that this will be the sickest I get for the rest of the year. UGH, I never get sick, and I hate it, I haaaate it. The only good thing about it is that you get an excuse to lie in bed all day and watch DVDs. Turns out that I had a lot to catch up on.
Started with Breaking Bad Season 1. Breaking Bad was one of those impulse buys I just picked up because I'd heard a lot of good things about it, but it has been sitting on my shelf for almost a year unwatched. But almost 10 minutes into the pilot, I was like, "HOLY SHIT, HOW HAVE I WHAT AM I WHAT IS THIS SHOW HOW DOES IT" like SERIOUSLY. It is SO good. I tried to explain it to a friend of mine and today, and I was like, "yeah, it's a show about a high school chemistry teacher who is diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer and he teams up with - OH, WHAT THE FUCK, JUST WATCH IT OKAY, IT IS SO GOOD." I don't know how else to explain it! I'm trying to download S2 now but it is TAKING FOREVER, and I know that I'll want to start S3 immediately after, like, I WANT IT AT ALL I WANT IT ALL NOW. And Jesse Pinkman, dude.
A man after my own heart.
In addition to Breaking Bad, I also watched Season 4 of The O.C. for the first time. It will come as no surprise to those of you who have seen it that I LOVED IT. A lot. Ryan has always been my favourite character, so when he's happy, I'm happy, and HE WAS SO HAPPY, it both surprised/thrilled me. I loved that he was not as much in his own head in this season, and I'm sure that Ben had a lot of fun with Fancy New Ryan because he is so surprisingly witty irl and it really came through in a delightfully (almost meta?) fashion. Ryan/Taylor saved the season, in my opinion. It often went Too Big (i.e. spirit animals), but I can't hate, especially not with the finale. Ugh, the scene with Ryan walking through the Cohen house was, for me, the biggest retribution for watching the show in the first place. I CRIED REAL TEARS.
Highlights:
- Julie to Ryan: "Tell me about her" and him describing meeting Marissa for the first time. I love it when we have a character describe an event that we're privy to, and Ryan's collapse into boydom ("I thought she was really hot") was so endearing/heartwarming to me. A+ show
- Ryan "stalking" Taylor
- Ryan saying "I love you" to Taylor for the first time (see also: "are you just pretending you're asleep so I'll tell you I love you while you're unconscious?" "Maybe.")
- Seth/Summer's game of chicken - "I meant what I said, I said what I meant; an elephant’s faithful one hundred percent"
- Summer and Ryan having a scene together - plus, her calling him Atwood, ATWOOD, he is established in their lives
- Seth listing the people Ryan has punched since he arrived in Newport: "Luke, then Luke, then ... Luke"
- The wedding!
I'm re-watching S1 now, and, yes, it is as perfect as you remember. With the exception of Oliver Trask ughhh, I hate so much of the things you choose to be. I'm on the second last disc at the moment, and I really want to picspam the full season, but my DVDs are of such poor quality 'cause I bought them as soon as they released. Does anyone know where I can find HD caps of OC S1???
Anyway, I made two icons. I'm not 100% pleased with them, but I was messing around in Photoshop and playing with colouring techniques, and digging through my favourite Atwood caps and this is the result. Both of them are from the pilot, because I'm feeling extra nostalgic today. One is BRIGHT and one is not and I'm not sure which I like better. Thoughts?
Also I'm starting my mid-semester break next week, and I want to start watching some new teev. So far on my list, I've got:
- The West Wing
- Six Feet Under
- Parks and Recreation
- Justified
I'm up for more suggestions if you've got 'em! Share with me your favourite shows! Also, I would not object to this turning into an O.C. appreciation post.
