I wonder how our grandparents/great-grandparents would feel if they could see us know- mine are almost all gone by now. To know that just like them, we, a struggling generation, seeking peace and finding ourselves mired with war; seeking hope in a new, progressive government; seeking comfort from an economy that keeps releasing higher job losses, lower profits, and less pocket money to spare; to know that we, too, are pinching our pennies, saving our bread bags and inventing new cheaper ways of getting by- just like they had to, just like the Great Crash, the Great Depression- we see the stock market rollercoastering through 500 point gains and 600 point losses daily- and to know that while no story could accurately describe the way things were, we know the way things are. And maybe that helps us understand history a little better. We're not sure if life would have been this hard without all the new challenges we face, but we know one thing: we have gone through it before, and we have survived before. And that gives us hope for the future.
