DISCUSSIONS OF INTEREST: * Via /r/Tolkienfans:
Why do people skip the songs?
I've noticed a lot of people mention that they dislike the songs and poems included in LotR. I can sort of understand the dislike of them, they're a very unique device and I can see why they wouldn't be to everyone's taste, even though I love them. But why do people skip them? They aren't more difficult to read than the rest of the text. They're always relevant to what's happening in the story at the time, unlike some other fantasy books. They also generally provide interesting/useful information (except for Tom Bombadil I guess). Why don't people just read through them even if they don't like them?
