Angela went up to her room with her cell phone.
"Mom?"
"Angie, honey! How are you?"
She smiled slightly. "I'm fine. Is work going okay?"
"It's great. Hopefully, I'm going to get a promotion which will put me closer to you guys in a few months."
"Really? That's great!" It would be so nice to have an adult that she could run to if things got too bad here. "When do you think?"
"Not sure. Hopefully by summer at least."
Angela wasn't sure if she could wait that long, but if she tried, maybe it would be all right.
She smiled. "I miss you a whole lot. The best thing about getting sick was having you visit me."
"Awwww, I miss you too, baby. Now are you still seeing that boy Elias?"
"Yeah. He's doing good, and we're getting along well."
"Good, I liked him. Especially since I think you could probably take him in a fight. That should always be a consideration when a daughter of mine is picking out boys to date." She laughed a little, and so did Angela.
"Oh, mom. He's very considerate." She grins. "Plus, he adores me." She doesn't have to say that she adores him back.
"Well, you just be sure to put him in his place if he does something you don't like."
Angela chewed on her lip. What she wanted to ask was not so pressing now, especially since it looked like her Mom was going to move closer to her. "Mom?"
"Yes, honey, what is it?"
"Do you think that sometime when you move closer, I could...visit you for a long while? Like...maybe a week or two?" she asked shyly.
There was silence on the other end of the line for a little while, and then, "Yeah, sweetie. I'd love that." Her mother's voice sounded thick and like she was smiling.
The two of them chatted of this and that for a few more minutes before saying their good byes.
Angela went and unpacked her suitcase, and then rubbed ointment on the new bruise on her shoulder. She could stick it out for a while longer. At least her Dad wasn't hitting her. He just shoved a little too hard, that was all.
It would be all right.
